Most non-dogmatists vote for the candidate whose personality they like.
While Mitt was/is great on paper, in person he's a dud.
Reagan was a great example of someone whom people generally liked. He beat an incumbent Democrat - one with little personal appeal, whereas Romney faced a personally-appealing incumbent and had little charm to match his opponent
