DRESSED FOR DEATH by Donna Leon, 341 pages

This book is #3 in Leon's mystery series about Italian cop Guildo Brunetti.

THE STORY: Butchers find a whore's dead body out behind the slaughter house they work for. The womans head has been destroyed by a steel pipe. Identification seems impossible. But the autopsy reveals the dead whore is a male in his 40s. He has a blonde wig, female clothing, makeup, and incompetent hair removal around the body. Detective Brunetti isn't convinced the dead man is a transvestite prostitute. Brunetti spends a while learning the dead man's identity. The man's a bank examiner. The dead man's subordinate swears he's a closet queer and pedophile. The dead man's wife denies it all. The elite VIPs lean on the cop to let it go.

Its a tale about young men who sell themselves on the street and to rich powerful patrons who like boys who look like girls.

I score it 4 plus starz.
