Within each category, what story ideas, concepts or tropes are just done ad nauseam? (Might be difficult in LW, I dunno).

For instance, in I/T, the 'mom sitting in my lap on a road-trip' has many many many entries. Same with 'glory-hole mom'.

I was just curious what other ideas were DTD. Your thoughts, denizens of AH?

If there are only two story variations for all stories (person goes on a journey, stranger comes to town), there are a handful of common story lines in every cat, but they're popular because readers are looking for variations on a theme.

I never get bored of reading my favourite story line. In fact, just change the names and physical descriptions slightly, and it'll be my new favourite thing.

Why would you think for an instant that there are only two story variations for all stories? I thought through my stories and 'person goes on a journey' and 'stranger comes to town' are absent in most of my stories.

All of them have been done to death. I spend a lot of time trying to come up with something far from the madding crowds. When I do, it goes over like a brick in a vacuum.

Agnes of God and Safety Net are prime examples.

People would rather read "Done to death" than something that they have to think about.

Though I haven't seen any new ones pop up recently, "Son who breaks both his arms gets blown by mom" used to be pretty common in Incest/Taboo.

Jock/nerd stories are pretty common in Gay Male.

Group sex stories are obsessed with rich men. They usually either inherit the money or win the lottery. Of course, every woman they encounter fucks them and a sister wives situation usually ensues. Real Gary Stu stuff.

Just thought through my stuff on Lit and, yes, like yours, 'person goes on a journey' and 'stranger comes to town' are conspicuous by their absence.

I've made a niche of doing the opposite of "done to death", and I seem to have found an audience of people who quite like thinking. But then, I don't write stroke, which possibly is what the masses want.

I/T might be prone to repeating the same setups over and over. Like others have pointed out, the readers seem comfortable with it. The I/T toplist is festooned with 'Mommy sits on son's lap.'

Then you and I are of like mind and you would prob'ly enjoy and appreciate Agnes and Safety Net. But you would be one of an elite club of people who get it. Could you handle that? ;)

Yeah, for every I/T plot, there's a ton of them. Pretty much the Literotica version of a superhero movie. Details around the edges may vary, but when you know what you're getting when you click.

I've managed to write a few successful I/T stories without repeating a common plot. The fact that other writer's do repeat setups could be attributed to it's making it easier to be popular in a population that doesn't want to be challenged.

Plots and storylines recur because they're expected and popular, init? The most popular pictures include certain landscape features. The most popular stories include certain textual features. They're not popular because they're old; they're old because they're popular. Audiences will always want stories about motherfuckers.

Agnes of God didn't do much for me, I'm afraid, as I grew up in an atheistic household and the religious theme was wasted on me. I suspect you've been pounded score-wise because, as a non-American looking in, Americans seem to have a curious puritan morality (which sits oddly with an erotica/porn site) - I suspect you had some readers who found it blasphemous?

Safety Net I liked - curious that it too sits with a low score. Perhaps too clever by half, perhaps too close to home - sad fucker in a bar reading porn on his phone, spots himself in the corner watching the pretty girl. There's some over in the Feedback Forum be creeped out by that - me, I just went away and wrote it, gave me one of my best story responses.

I honestly don't know what's already written or not. In the end it doesn't really matter, because everything I can think of someone probably has already written it and I just haven't seen it yet.
So I'll just write and believe that as long as my story is better, it should survive longer and attract more people to read it than the other one.

Which does not mean I tend to go for regular themes - my current story is about a guy finding himself being able to read the mind of his girlfriend and not giving in to mindcontrol. That one might actually be decently original. But like I said, there's probably someone out there who has written a similar story. I just don't think there are many of them.

Exactly.

As another erotica author I chat with once said they're all tropes for a reason and that reason is people love them.

I just said it it recently on another thread its like readers are the people who eat PB&J every day for a year and when someone slips them a ham sandwich for a change they react with WTF?

My incest series Broken went over like a lead brick...drug addiction, abuse, mental illness, violence...a twenty year sibling relationship built on pure issues and dysfunction(hence the title) oh and the cardinal sin....rough as hell BDSM sex.

It has good scores, but only because by chapter 5 I was lucky if the same 50 people were reading it.

Meanwhile "look, sis has tits' style stories were hitting 1000 votes in a couple days.

That Damn red dress was another of my take this tropes efforts. Again decent score, but vote totals well below my other daddy daughter classics like "Bound for daddy"

The mom on the lap is not only DTD but they are immensely popular. I think there's three of them in the top 50 all time favorited stories.

Others.

Every white woman wants a black cock-thank you loving wives/cuck for turning interracial sex into pure racist bullshit.

Noncon/reluctance-No always means yes-and all women love to be 'taken' and these days a loathsome disturbing trope especially in the wake of #metoo and the fact people are finally realizing how badly women are abused by any man with power

All women or men, no matter how straight secretly want to experience their own gender.

If a mom/sis/aunt sees her son/brothers/nephews cock they absolutely have to have it.

Anyone caught masturbating will immediately be offered "let me take care of that' by whoever catches them.

Just an accidental glimpse of a mother's breasts will be enough for a son who has never thought about his mother in the past want to have sex with her.

All men who enjoy watching their wives with another man are 'cucks' aka pussies and faggots in LW.

All women are sluts.

All young girls turn into drooling giggling cum dumpsters at the site of a middle aged loser.

All women want to be gang banged.

All 'shy virgins' can fuck like a porn star and take five guys at once for their first time.

That theory is based on declaring any story in which the protagonist changes a "journey" and any story in which someone enters into a new situation for them " a stranger coming to town".

Really?

Now I want to write a story where a guy breaks his penis and his Mom shakes his hand.

Heh. A lot of Christians thought it was blasphemous. A lot of Atheists found it equally disturbing. few found the middle ground of understanding it. Here is a 19 yr old girl who has been sheltered and protected by her parents and the church all her life. Has been told sex is dirty and must be "endured". But her body tells her the truth in the form of orgasm and she sees it as communion with God. So instead of denouncing sex as some sort of punishment, she incorporates it in her beliefs for a happier life.

I'm an atheist too. but having grown up in a Christian house I have seen all sides of it. And it is something that is typically Christian. Her mother saw sex as a chore and therefore of Satan. She found enjoyment so it must be of God. While the truth is, it was neither.

I'm a satanist and the word you're really looking for is brainwashed in describing your character.

Women raised in conservative family values households are not only brainwashed by the 'men' in the family but have borderline Stockholm syndrome which is why they seek the same assholes and actually think they're treated fairly.

Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, any freedom at all? Women in those families have no idea what that even means.

That's why when one gets away and cuts loose....wow do they cut loose.

They also tend to end up with abusive assholes who take advantage of them, but their supposedly loving dads turn their backs and let them get abused because they now live in shame...

Yeah, I've met a few of those families.

The thing with all of those is that you're catering to popular fantasies for the readers you're targeting. Now in reality, how many teenage girls get involved with middle-aged guys? A few, enough that you can write it plausibly and believably and make it hot and it caters to that fantasy that many men have. If you want to read teenage girls fantasies, go to Wattpad and read about vampires and hot young guys and all the other teenage girl tropes and you could list those out and you'd be bored silly but teenage girls really get themselves worked up over those stories and that's a huge market that spends. It's all about your target readership and what you personally enjoy writing writing and what you're intended to do with your story.

Done to Death? After being just a reader on Lit for over a decade, I decided to start writing the stories I couldn’t find easily on Lit, the ones that I wanted to read. So I became a member and started submitting my own stories. I’m not a professional, but I have gotten better at writing over time.

The “only” two things consistent in my stories are the fact there is a TV/TS/TG character in them and lots of human emotions to humanize all the characters. Those two things are what I want in my stories above all else - mainly the emotional aspects to humanize the characters, to make them believably relatable to the readers.

Where has it gotten me? Nowhere. I don’t compete in any contests on Lit nor am I looking to publish my material elsewhere. There just isnt enough readers or writers in the categories I submit. That’s fine with me. I’m not looking mainstream. I want the road least traveled, the one with the most pot holes.
