U.S. comedian Don Rickles dead at 90

U.S. comedian Don Rickles, the performance curmudgeon known for his abrasive mocking and more recently as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story movies, has died at the age of 90.

Rickles died Thursday morning from kidney failure at his Los Angeles home, according to his longtime publicist Paul Shefrin.

Though people close to him praised him as a good guy and a devoted family man, Rickles gained fame for an acerbic, insult-filled brand of humour that spared no one — from regular Joes to U.S. presidents to the famously hot-tempered Frank Sinatra, who became one of his champions and a close friend.

Born in New York, Rickles served in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War and later graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Legend

there will never be a comedian like him. He said whatever came to his head. He believed if you insult everyone then its not really an insult...

I remember him from the 60s Beach Blanket movies. I loved his performances.

I had absolutely no idea he had ambitions to be a serious actor. It's as if we learned that Charlie Sheen studied to be a priest.

One thing about Rickles, like his contemporary Rodney Dangerfield: if you saw he was scheduled to be a guest on a talk show, you had to make time to watch. It was a guaranteed classic.

I didn't know that either. Always thought he set out to be a comedian. I heard about Don Rickles acting ambitions when listening to a talk show the day after his death. I thought he had died some time ago. The same show said it was Frank Sinatra who convinced Rickles to stay with being a good comedian. Always loved Rickles. Now I have to buy the book he wrote. Didn't know about the book until lately.

Charlie Murphy died too...maybe I missed the thread. He was funny.
