I know, sounds silly, but how does a Domme learn to do what she does?

IE the uses, safety concerns, etc of a given device, toy, whatever.

I've read quite a bit, even lurk in many of the BDSM Talk threads though I don't post in all of them because "gee that sounds cool" just isn't productive or helpful, you know?

So is there a kind of school for dominants? A training pamplet? Educational monolouge?

Lots and lots of convos and observations, assisting in scenes, etc. I learned most of what I know hands on, although I've picked up literature along the way and I'm an avid chatter.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, Practice, Practice...

Seriously, most BDSM clubs offer classes, and the basic "how to", it's just a matter of finding what subjects you're intrested in, and taking the classes. Then finding a willing submissive to practice on.

I have seen a few places which offer training, especially those which operate on a professional level and are looking for people to train with the possibility of working for them. I know my daughter has been approached in this manner and is to work with a trainer in private who wil train her in the safe use of all toys etc., deal with the psychological and safety aspects, and be a support person for her if at the end of training she accepts the offer to operate their dungeon.

Also, if you go to local munches and such, depending on the type of munch, many have demos in which they invite participation, you can find mentoring from other Dom/mes who use toys or a style you like. One thing I've found in this lifestyle is that (in person at least) most folks are incredibly helpful. They WANT to see you succeed, because the more of us doing it right means the less fucked up subs we have to 'fix' later on.

I may have just totally reiterated my last post but I'm exhausted, so forgive me please. :p

Down here the club has HOTS, or hands on training seminars. Another way is to find someone in your area who's really good at whatever you want to learn and ask them for some lessons.

Kitty Queen

When I first started (ages and ages ago) I had someone who was more experienced than me as a play partner. He explained the usage to the tools he wanted me to try and then basically spent days teaching me proper technique before I ever had the pleasure of his skin.

Everybody else has some really good ideas (especially the demos and getting in contact with a mentor type person in the scene) but the best advice ever? Just practice. Learn all you can, practice on couches, on chairs, on yourself (heheheh..)Nothing teaches like hands on.

(and of course we have discussed using moi for a practice run or 20) :rose:

Ohh- use you for practice? Come on out to Cali 'round Sept/Oct time frame.

And yeah, practicing on a couch is a good idea and will probably do that, though I imagine it'll sound funny on my phleather couch, LOL. Poor abused couch. Kitty claws and floggers.

Vixie... I think a good partner can take you to some of those places you want to go.... It seems to me that a lot of reading and deciding what you want and need are a prerequisite... There are several websites that come to mind including Castle Realm.com. There are others too but I like this one because it has well written articles...

Then again there is always the possibility that Mistress Shadowsdream might take you in hand!

Ok, this is great, but what do you do if you dont have a local club? Or a local mentor? I am reading in preparation for my weekend, but to be honest i dont know what the hell i am doing...I just know why....

Any advice for a first timer?

Thanks all for the replies. Between work and being sick right now, not responding much but I am reading.
Thank you all so much :rose:
