I'm writing a poem, and it's not really about Superman...but what do you call the red cape he wears? Is it a cape? Somehow that doesn't sound right.

Yep, it's a cape. It was the latest thing in superhero-wear at the time.

Thank you! I was always fascinated by their muscly thigh muscles under the tights. Tights!

That's why I thought cape sounded wrong! Capes aren't so macho, are they?

They're more macho than robes or gowns, so he's probably pretty happy with a cape.
:D

If he really cares about looking macho, he should lose the red tights.

I never understood the tights. Might just be cause i'm from a different culture.

So's superman, so we may never fully understand the secret of his tights. Or the cape. I always assumed it somehow helped him fly, maybe like a rudder or something, or it kept him aloft.

I have a hard time picturing Superman flying without his cape. He'd look naked.

And if my theory is indeed correct, he would plummet to the ground.

But it would be so cute watching him flap his arms frantically.

Would he make a superhero-sized hole in the ground that went to the center of the earth?

Or splat?

This comes right from the mouth of a big comic book fan. He says Yes it is called a cape. The "cape is a sign of importance" and the red and blue color are "the symbols of truth and justice".

I never knew there was so much thought behind the superhero outfits.

They're not "tights," they're the legs of a one piece union "suit" -- the shorts are to hide the "flap" in the back. :p

Seriously, both Superman and Batman wear "tights" or a full body suit inder their shorts because they were created in a time when it was "immodest" for even a man to go bare-legged in public except on the beach.

Oddly enough, the only "Super-Hero" to go bare-legged was Wonder Woman and her original short-skirted costume was considered scandalous at the time she was created.

Only Prince Nemor -- often more super-villian than super-hero -- was bare-legged and bare-chested in the golden age of Super-Hero comics and he obviously had to be clad in swimwear because of his nature (a merman) and could be scandalous because he was intially a villian.
