Does story 'have' to include a full-on sex scene?

I posted this question in the Author's Hangout, but figured I might get more replies here on the GB.

I'm working on my first story and can't decide wether or not my characters should have full-on sex, or just a damn good petting session which leaves them both wanting more.

Do you feel that a story has to include a full-on sex scene? By this I mean intercourse. Can Lit readers be satisfied with just fondling, kissing, petting and such, or do they demand more?

If you are a good writer, it can work.

If you are a crap one, no.

I too am working on my first story....4 pages before the sex even started...I must have read too much Steven King when it comes to character development and setting up the story.

Getting back to your question.

If it's a well written story, I don't mind if the sexuality doesn't include full-on sex..as long as one is led to believe it will occur later on in subsequent chapters.

Some times though, I am interested in reading only the sex parts..(those are usually the ones poorly written)

But when someone can make me feel as though I was watching the movie while reading, then the subject matter is secondary..

Hope that answers your question.:)

Hey it's your story. As long as it pleases you. Just be prepared to get feedback from the chromosomally challenged such as "u r such a stupid I'm read the hole storry and he does not even stick it in her pussy. It suck I hope you not write any more stupid storreys like this one."

What I posted was as economical as German fucking.

So, in other words if the German is great at oral, fingering, kissing and others it doesn't matter if we ever get to the penetration? And if he sucks at the others I should just not even go as far as intercourse? ;)

Vodka, I have no clue if I'm a good writer or not. It's my first story!

Tungwagger,
I guess we're the same when it comes writing. I'm on the fifth page and it's taken me four pages to even get close to any action!

I'm not used to writing creative stories really. I used to do it as a kid a lot, but somehow my imagination seems to have gone lost since those days. After four years of Uni papers, thesis' and new article writing my creative writing probably is a bit lacking.

Ok, so if you at times only read the sex parts and find them that they are the more poorly written parts of the story, what is a good sex scene to you?

Well Vodka, You've confirmed once again why I have you on ignore...But silly me, I had to see what your POV was...

At least you're consistant...

Okay...I'm on the spot now...

Not necessarily the more poorly written parts, but the writers' poor writing over all. I just skim over the sex on poorly written stories, and the better written ones I tend to linger.

A good sex scene to me is more than the mechanics, it has to do with stimuli that as a reader I can almost feel in my mind.

Descriptive phrases that explain the smell of a lover, the shape of the breast, the various stages of undress.

The way the light and shadows dance off bodies, a trickle of sweat down the small of her back, or the hair becoming sweat soaked. The resistance to comply that gradually fades.

Most of the poorly written stories on this board don't really give an insight into the characters, they go straight for the sex, without setting up motivation. For the wam bam thank you ma'am types, that works, but for those who really like to read they become just a brief story that is soon forgotten.

Write what is in your heart. That will not lead you astray. Then...later...you can always add to (edit) to your hearts content too.

If you want lots of feed-back make it as explicit as you can.

Any scene setting or character building is frowned on by the regular "browse and stroke" crowd. Thay wantt "wetness" and Hard cocks? right away.

I have to agree with GP. That's why I'm having a hard time with my story. I've spent so much building it up before the sex that most people would stop reading.

Not that I'm trying to go for most popular Literotican or anything.

Oh the hell with it...I'm sure SOMEONE will like it if I ever finish it...even if I have to e-mail the damn thing!:p

Well, considering I'm mainly writing the story as a writing excercise for myself I guess I don't care much if I end up in the top 10 rating or anything. Still, it'd be nice if SOMEONE reads it! LOL

Actually I think a lot of the stuff I have in the beginning is dialogue. I'm not used to writing dialogue but figured I'd give it a try. I'm sure I could cut out some of the dialogue and cut to the chase, and perhaps I will. For now I just write whatever pops into my head. I can always go back and edit etc.

So, how long can a sex scene really be? I think a lot of the scenes I've written are quite short and to the point. Do people get put off by long foreplay before "getting to the good stuff?"

That's okay...I consider myself the exception to the rule...

I actually do like to read!!!

:D

What a great idea!

I've written a couple of erotica stories where the sexual action does not take place for several pages. I wondered too if I could get away with removing all the gory sexual details and leave it primarily on the reader's imagination to fill in the blanks. This won't please everyone (ie, the develpmentally challenged) but it would make for a nice story, as well as future developments.

Grrr
I'm bent.
Interactive talking dildos get no respect these days.

I would say that it wouldn't bother me - if it was well written and the story is interesting. You can put in some foreplay, even just kissing and light petting to keep things interesting until you get to the heavy stuff.

I do mostly download erotic stories to use as masturbation fodder, so I am not really interested in reading for an hour before I get to something that I can masturbate to, but there are ways of accomdating that - such as telling the person they can skip to such and such chapter to get to the "good stuff".

I have been planning on writing two erotic stories, both requiring some lead up to the sex. I plan on doing them in HTML with pics and an expanding/collapsing format so people can easily skip ahead if they want.

One way to accomodate people who want their sex in the story up front is to put some up front; have the story start off with one of the characters in the middle of sex, and then progress on with your story building to get to the main gist of your story. Not all stories are amenable to that, but my two can be since I don't really need the story to explain the main character having sex.

Just write as well as you can and make it interesting.
