does it belong on literotica?

So, I'm working on my very first erotica story. Well. It's not my very first, as I have a long history of writing very crass slash fiction, but that is neither here nor there. The story I'm working on now is BDSM in nature, and there is a lot of sex and sexual tension in it, but I'm finding that I'm spending as much time developing the characters as I am developing the sex. It has the tone of a standard short story--and a mediocre one at that, possibly--that happens to be quite erotic, as opposed to a work of erotica.

Part of the thing that I enjoy about erotica is that the characters are often left just undeveloped enough that the reader is able to put him/herself into their positions. But the man and woman in my story are very specific, and that seems to take away from the erotic nature of the story as well.

So, my question is: should I post it here or just write it for fun, but keep it to myself?

Hi there,

I say, post it! ;) Lots of people here like character development with their sex. If you don't like the reception it receives, you can always pull it later.

Now about that slash…fanfic or original characters, hmm? Hard slash is good to find. ;)

Luck to you,

Yui

fanfic, from some really strange fandoms. But somehow I'm finding creating my own characters and making them have sex to be far more difficult.

It sounds like you're writing the kind of story "Literotica" implies -- Literate Erotica. It not only belongs on Literotica, it's exactly the kind of story Literotica was founded to support and is so hard to find on the 'Net.

Post it, for sure.

It's nice to come across stories that have more depth to them than the norm.

This is something I really try to do in my writing -- and what I look for in what I'm reading. That's what's hottest to me. However, I've been slammed for not including ENOUGH detail.

I guess some people need all the blanks filled in.

Post it!

Post it.

Good writing requires character and plot. Doesn't matter if it's erotica or not.

And as WH and sailorm pointed out, there's not nearly enough of good writing available.

God, I never knew that! Seriously, if that's the case, why are the standards so low here?

I like fanfic - how obscure/strange? ;)

On that note, there is a "celebrity section" here that allows for fanfic if you are interested. And please, post a link for us to your story when it posts.

Best of luck,

Yui ^_^

I'm willing to bet that if you do it well you will end up with high votes, complimests, and constant fans.

Not only that, but if you look at most of the contest winners, they are far from your standard stroke story.

the stuff here runs the gambit from people who in all seriousness write the kind of stuff that dirtgirl writes in parody (I rilly did fuck my cuzin, let me tell y'all all about it!) to some of oggs stuff that may take 20 pages before there's a sex scene:) (we love you ogg)

Write it, post it, and if you have the stomach for it, but it up for critique in the story discussion circle, you might improve your craft.

And you might even win yourself a hundred dollars.

No offense, but I think WH might be projecting what *he wants lit to be.

I think that Lauren likes that kind of story, but I think lit is for *all the pervs- the lowly ones *and the literary ones.

Yo, yo, yo. G-C Two-Oh. Word up.

Where the fuck did that come from? Must be a new voice in my head.

Posting a question on the Author's hangout - where very little writing seems to be discussed but is a welcome change and thanks for the thread - is a sure fire way to get validation for continuing the character development in your story. Don't worry about getting the characters sexual' I am sure that it will come.

You tell 'em V-man.

Okay, enough from you. Shut up. Damn, where the fuck is that medicine?

Anyway, you will find that many readers like the more developed characters, and that they are drawn to the continuation of a saga that explores the personalities that you are creating. There is a demand for that, but it is not universal. Some readers are just loking for a Penthouse letter online, and they may react negatively. However, you will probably never hear from them.

On the other hand, readers who are affected positively by your well developed characters will usually contact you and encourage you to continue in that vein.

Who you tellin' to shut up, be-yatch?

That is it. I have fucking had it with you guys. Shut the fuck up, all of you.

I really am sorry, but I have a chaotic situation developing here and I have to go. Write the story with comprehensive, well developed characters and I am sure you will have a great Literotica experience.

Okay, if I have to stop writing on a thread one more time to tell you fucking people to behave yourselves I think I am just going to...

I over develop my characters. It works for me. If the story is strong, even the sex can be mediocre and still get you a lot of compliments. All tastes are served here, and if you post you will carve a niche for yourself in whatever genre of erotica you choose.

Any standards are exceptional in the online Porn Stories field. :p

sweetnpetite, I'm not projecting what I'd like, I'm repeating what I was told about the origin of the name "Literotica" by Laurel.

Those comments should still be buried way back in the dusty place old posts go to die. If you can get the search engine to track Laurel's posts back to the beginnings of the forums, you can find them.

Well I always thought that's what Literotica meant anyway. Kind of like scientifiction.

What you seem to have Gray is a liking for character. In slash you have ready made characters whom the readership already know so not much need for exposition there just getting down to the action. But action without character is a very thin broth indeed.

Write it, post it.

I'm trying to include more sex in less pages.

With several of my stories I found that the sex was not essential because the story worked as well (whisper it quietly 'if not better') without the sex scenes. I even came 3rd in a local short story competition with one of my Lit stories after I had edited the sex out. That was 'Bastille Day' - a competition entry here.

Sex scenes are a problem if they don't contribute to the development of the story. Sometimes I think my sex scenes are like the forced break in a bad stage or film musical when 'Cue for a song and a dance' is obvious.

Some of the stories on Lit are just sex scenes. There is no plot, no character interaction (except the physical!) and no development. They can be very good within their limitation of being a sexually arousing vignette. They, and many stories here, can be dire. However even the worst on Literotica are usually better than much written erotica to be found on the internet.

However my excuse is that my characters dictate the development of the plot. I try to avoid the 'Dick sees Jane's 38DDs. They fuck' stories.

If you are thinking about character and plot development you are well on the way to writing good erotica.
