Does anyone know the required amount of water that a child of 8 years old, and about 80lbs should drink everyday?

I thought it was 6 - 10 8 oz. glasses period.

I didn't think there was a weight requirement once you were no longer a toddler.

Thanks for the reply well i'm not sure. i'm babysitting and due to the fact that it has been so hot, i told the little girl i sitting that she had to drink at least 3 8oz cups of water. Well, anyway her mom want to have a problem with that. Saying that if she drank that much water that she would throw up. Which i can't really understand because that would only happen if she drank them all at one time and that not what i was telling her.

Sure, if the child shotguns all three, she'll yack. But 3 will in no way harm her unless you were standing over her with a funnel forcing it down her esophagus.

Did the child complain of cramping or a stomachache? Water passes through you quickly unless you're dehydrated, so odds are she'd pee it out long before she threw it up unless you waited til after she finished a 3 hour long meal to cram the water in her.

Nothing wrong with what you did....especially if the child had been exercising or was very active...

Maybe try getting her to drink 6 oz after every half hour-45 minutes...or 2 oz every 10 minutes as some sort of game...what you did was right, you were looking out for the kid....

It all depends upon the activity and environmetal conditions.

For example: In Texas, outside in the heat, 8-10 oz. per hour if activity is playing hard.
Inside in the a/c playing, 6-8 oz. per hour and a half.
Rule of thumb is if your thirsty drink, but there again depends upon the activity and environment.
Not enough will send you into shock leading to Heat Cramps, next is Heat Exhaustion, last is the most severe HEAT STROKE.

Once a victom of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke, you are more than likely to have it again but more severe!

You should talk it over with the parents about activities and environmental conditions. REMEMBER thier child is in YOUR care, YOU are responsible!
