set the bios password on the puter? there's 3 options in the bios.. set setup password, set user password, and enable another one (not remembering which word they used)... i have the two passwords set, so does that mean i have to enable the other one for it to be set? and if i do enable that.. the password is then the same as the user password, right?

W&U

No, as long as you save and exit the setup Bios, where you are able to set those passwords, they're are as you have typed them.
If you enable the third password...lemme see, I believe you will also have to set that, and save/exit bios.

After that you're all set, so to speak.

that's what i thought... but there isnt an option (at least not that i saw) to set the other password.. there's the two set password options above it, and those are it

Can I ask which OS you're using W&U

They are not quite the same, small thing vary in each, like setting passwords and other stuff.

i'm running a dual-os.. win98se and win2k.. i use the 2k more often, but they're both still there (i'm roomie proofing the puter)

If it's only to roomie proff the puter, you're all set.

It does take a considerable amount of time and knowledge to hack through those PW.

You're all set W&U

i'm not all set though... she cant get into 2k as long as i have it locked... but she can restart it and get into 98 and mess with the whole puter there... and i want to keep her from being able to do that... the bios password will keep her out of there for sure

i know it takes lots of time and effort to hack through.. and i doubt she could ever figure it out.. but the problem is not locking myself out of the puter too...

so.. do i want to enable the one, and assume its one of the other passwords i've set since it doesnt give the option to set one, right?

Set the passwords in the 98 bios as well.

And yes you can enable the other password too, it will only give you an additinal option of locking her out, elsewhere in the system though.

so there's two different bios? that doesnt sound right.. i run the bios before i even get an option to pick the os..

No there is not to DIFFERENT Bios W&U
There is however features from one and the other that needs to be set.

However you can do something else. Give yourself admin status in the users options in 98, and set it as "only admin" can get to drives, files and stuff, that means that you're roomie would be sitting there and starring at a login screen, and wont be able to bypass it at all.

how do i do that then?

i dont use 98 very often... so i need a little instruction (it is a needed os for one of my drivers)

and how would setting it as an admin affect my connection to my network accounts?

Okay you do it in the control panel, under the icon users...there is a step by step thingy in it, you cant miss it.

It wont affect anything for your network connections or your previous settings. All it does is lock out all unauthorized traffic on your computer.

You're welcome W&U

If it doesnt work, feel free to drop a PM, IM or email and I'll see if I can help you further.
