Does anyone know how the New! list works?

Did anyone else notice how the New! List gets rearranged during the day as new stories are added?

I mean:

On days with many stories getting posted, the New! list is updated several times a day. But! When new stories are added to the list during the day, the newest arent all placed on top. Instead they are interspersed within the stories that has already been on the list for hours.

Does anybody know how that works? (and maybe why?)

To me it seems a bit silly. Checking the New! list is one way to keep up and see if one of your favorite authors has a new thing up. But if you check New! list for the present day, you will not see a complete list of all stories for that day. You will see a partial list. Worse, yet, if you come back later in the day -- to check if more has been added -- you now have to go through the whole list again, including all the titles you noticed earlier in the day. Because the newly added are interspersed with the old.

Why?

What is the point of stories being added to New! list slowly over the day, if the day's list gets blended every time additions are added? (It would make sense if new stories were added on top of old, that way more authors would get the benefit of being near the top a little while during busy days.)

Also strangely, the blending in is only for freshly added, seemingly the stories already on there retains the same order compared to each other.

Not, very random.

Is randomness of New! list placement just another myth?

Of course for a reader the solution is simple. Only check out day old New! list titles -- problem solved. (As far as I know they don't 'add' to one day old New! list titles.) Although to that end, it would be nice if the transition between yesterday's stories and today's was marked more clearly!

(Scrolling scrolling scrolling. Today, today. Scrolling, scrolling. Ah yesterday. Scrolling back up, up. Today. Down. Yesterday. A bit more up. Still yesterday. See what I mean? Annoying.)

Of course this rant was motivated by a personal "AAARRRGGH". When I jumped out of bed and went to my keyboard this morning (well 10 am, I'm a lazy slacker of a bum). I opened lit to check if my newest story had been approved yet.

It had! Had one vote already too.

Checked out New! list.

Nope my story wasn't there yet. A bit later it had another vote. But still not on new list.

A bit later it had two votes, still not on new list.

Well now it's on New! list. Inserted as third from bottom of today's stories at this time :(

I know, I know. I can just go advertise on "New story advertisments" on feedback forum, to make up for the late bad insertion on New! list. But I was more in the mood for ranting out my discontent than heading off to market myself.

Told ya I was a lazy bum, didn't I?

I can't answer your question but I am sure others can... or at least guess.

But what I can suggest is keep focused on the joys of writing and getting responses.. then the impact of random and/or random on votes becomes less important.... as do the votes themselves.

Having said that, we have all shared your pain...

Thank you for the sympathy :)

I'm not too agonised. It will get read eventually, sometime, someday. As people click through to my profile from other stories I will post in the future.

But I really need to lay off the coffee in the mornings. Hehe. Especially when new stories are approved, going all hyper on caffeine and then jumping on lit, oh dear, oh dear.

You deserve a bouquet of roses for being so nice in the face of a caffeinated rant, KC.

Dear miss ellynei,

Normally I don’t post on other peoples threads but my eyes caught yours this morning and it’s on a subject I’m quite conversant with. I posed the following question to our leaders many, any moons ago:

QUESTION: Could you explain the formula (and the reason for it) that you use to determine where on the ‘New Story’ page a story is placed?

The answer I received was as follows:

Dear Scouries

Special contest entries are almost always listed first.

‘Non Consent’ stories are always listed last. ‘Incest’ and ‘BDSM’ stories are usually very near the end every day. ‘Romance’, ‘Illustrated’, and ‘Audio’ tales are always near the top.

Certain author’s stories are also always listed near the top. These are stories by authors who have signed yearly contracts and pay for their lofty positions on the NEW STORY list. Stories by these authors also are the first to go up each day.

The terms of annual contracts vary depending on the number of stories you plan to put up on the site for the year. A typical contract for 2008 for 50 placements on the top of the NEW STORY list was $1000.

After these ‘contract’ authors are taken care of Literotica holds an auction every afternoon and certain of the authors with new stories coming out the next day are allowed to bid for any remaining places in the top ten. These stories are also in the first lot to go up every day.

Depending on the day of the week a winning bid to place your story in the Top 10 varies from $50 to $75.

The rest of the stories submitted and approved to go up that day have to wait their turn.

I hope this answers your question! And I hope you won’t complain about it. We do live in America and we all believe in CAPITALISM. These small fees help finance the site and allow the wonderful L+M bring your stories to the general public.

If by any chance you’d like to be ‘qualified’ to join the daily auction I’d suggest you contact management. 2009 contract application forms I believe will be available in November. Again, contact management if you are interested.

Please disregard the above, as total crap and lies.

Well at least someone kind of tried to make an explanation ;)

We do live in America

I don't ;)

Well at least being so far down the New! list, trolls and tough critics don't see it either. Seven votes now, scoring 5.0 average still hehe. Almost like the early days of my non-erotic series. Watching each vote, pop in. Hour after hour. Trying to guess how many fivers will pop in before the first less than five hehe.

Quite entertaining on a slow day ;)

No... I don't get out much.

Scouries lives in his own little fantasy world that he tries to make everyone else believe is real. No one but the owners of this site knows exactly how the New page works and they aren't saying.

The only thing he was close on was that incest and reluctant go at the end for the most part. It does seem that authors who have been here longer get closer to the front but that might also mean that they take less time to get through the inspection process. The people doing the checking get to know you after a while.

Welcome to the madhouse of Lit, by the way. (Not to be confused with the madhouse that Scouries lives in. )

Admitted, I am a little newbie :)

Still adding stuff like. 'Is my punctuation ok now?' to the afterwords of my stories.

Buuuut, if I was participating in the survivor contest (which I am not), I'd have 150+ 1k stories up there! I'm not participating in that thing, though, so my attempts at learning to write are organised in more logical lumps summing up to 22 postings.

Planning to gather them in fewer ones later on, when they are more advancely edited ;)

"advancely" is a cute word. I hope you're a woman

Oops, didn't realise really, how much of the day had passed with me hanging out here.

Best get back to work, I figure. Before one of the few, yet fanatic, Majgen readers comes up with a showel, a hacksaw, and murder in eyes. saying, "You promised to work hard on finishing book two. YOU PROMISED."

Elly looks over her shoulder, checking no such mirage is present yet.

"I KNOW, I know. I'll get on it, I will. I promise. Geeze."

I think I lingered too long :(

New story had eight fivers, and then the ninth was a three. Probably a disgruntled Majgen reader. Lacking a showel and a hacksaw, what else could he do to point me back to work?

Evil. Evil.

I'm on it, I'm on it. Be nice or I'll tell you how it ends!

Glad you like my strangely correct english Sub joe :)

MAJJJGENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.. ok sorry, this story was quite entertaining too :) not really interested in this kind of d/s though. Well written and entertaining nonetheless, altho less than majgen :p
quote end.

Dear Anonymous in HOLLAND
I want Majgen completed too. I'm working on it, I'm working on it. I really am.

"I promise," she muttered, and withdrew further into her cave. "I promise." Was it her voice or an eccho, who could tell?

"If only you knew, you would know." Little sound escaped the cave now as Elly ventured deeper and deeper. "You would understand why it takes so long." Undecipherably muffled words ecchoed out of the cave before one last partially understandable sentence could be heard.

"More complicated than playing Jeeiouma."

I  ellynei and her strangely correct English

I pronounce it "ellynei".

Joe said what I was gonna.

As regards posting of stories and time of day, no one has ever taken that much trouble on tracking their stories, I mean ever.

Be thankful for the 3 score, because if you got to ten votes with a perfect five your next score would have been a one. Guaranteed.

I have tracked my last couple of submissions and they all (five of them) were at the very top of the list. Mostly, because they had received an E.
