that Rudy Guiliani's RNC speech, currently in progress, is basically a reminisence of 9/11?

And does anyone believe that he grabbed someone by the arm that day and said "Thank God George Bush is our president?" I hate to see our nation's tragedy being used in this way.

McCain was awfully good though.

I am offended -

that they continue to parade family members personally touched by the 9/11 tragedy out on stage.

:(

They are politicians, they will do anything to retain power.

There is a wonderful object lesson in this in the UK at the moment. Tony Bliar became Prime Minister in his late forties. To achieve that demands almost super-human energy and ambition. Where does he go from there? He can't stay Prime Minister for thirty years, it would be too boring. His solution is to bounce the UK, against all the opinion polls, into a United States of Europe so that he can try to get the better and bigger job of being President of the USE.

It's a convention, they are going to Stir the patriotic pot, the War leader theme, and how you have been protected from terrorism. That's where they have all their stock.

At the DNC, they spent the majority of their time riping GWB. That's where they have their stock.

There was a time, not so long ago where these conventions had a huge amount of significance. The electors to these things didn't come in with their votes already foresworn to someone because of primaries or caucses. They came in and selected the party's nominies. Seven, eitht and nine ballots were not uncommon, before they could agree on a candidate. The corruption and back room deals were legendary.

The conventions have ceased to be a tool for selecting a candidate. They are now simply one huge, gaudy, photo op. Their only true function now, is to provide "newsworthy" politics. The speeches are geared for soundbites, the appearances for star quality endorsement.

When you watch them, you are basically watching one huge trial run for the commercials you will see over the last few months of the campaign. If 9/11 is the buzz word at the convention, expect to see it rehashed in commercial till Nov. 4.

No, I do not think it was 'crass.'

It could have been but it was not.

More innocent people were murdered in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001 than were killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

A nation was stunned, a city was devastated it was an event that will rival Pearl Harbor in history.

Both the Federal Government, the City of New York and the people of the United States and indeed the world, rose to the disaster with honor and devotion.

Should it be a part of the Republican Convention is not a valid question, it is a part.

I watched most of the first night of the convention and all of the major speeches that were broadcast. It was well done and for the most part a plea to the American people and indeed the world, to recognize that this war on Terrorism will define world history for the next half century.

And I thought the term 'crass' did only exist in Germany.

I have no quarrel with Republicans (or Democrats) talking about the war on terror, claiming to be the best suited for fighting it, etc. Actually, I don't have any problem, politically, with GWB marking his "war president" territory. I don't agree, but I think that's fair game. What bothered me was Guiliani spent a pretty significant portion of his speech actually reliving the details of the attack. That's what I thought was inappropriate - using the horrific story of that day to whip people up and scare them, as if those details somehow belong to GWB and his party.
