They would like to sell i want to buy it i have been out bid twice on ebay.

So if you would like to make a few bucks let me know.

Thank you.

Be sure you get '98 SE

Second Edition. It works much better than the original version. That is, IT Works.

Don't pay much for it, go to you local computer store and see if they have a old copy of it.. As this is an unsupported version of Windows anymore, most don't keep it around.

Your best and cheapest way is to just get a burnt copy of it. As Microsoft no longer sells this, I do not believe it is a legal issue anymore.

They discontinued support for it about 2 years ago, but the updates are still available online.

Most used computer stores will have a copy, just call one, or look online.

The advice you are getting is WRONG!

I hate to tell you that the people who have been posting are VERY WRONG! I am a computer tech and altho 98 is not sold as much as XP, it is still very much in use and Microsoft is supporting 98. To get a burn copy will still be illegal. Your best bet is to look for a store that is still selling it. If you do a search on line, you will find many. Or just keep trying to buy on Ebay.

Here are parts of an article found in PC World:

Just days before it was to end support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft has decided to extend the life of the products until June 30, 2006.
The Redmond, Washington-based software vendor also extended support for Windows Millennium Edition, which was set to end December 31, 2004, until June 30, 2006, it says in a statement Monday.
Despite the availability of Windows XP since late 2001, Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE, which came to market in June 1998 and June 1999, respectively, are still widely used.
Research firm IDC estimates that over 58 million copies of Windows 98 were installed worldwide at the end of 2003, says Dan Kusnetzky, vice president of systems software research at IDC.
AssetMetrix, an Ottawa-based IT asset analysis tool vendor, late last year collected data on over 370,000 PCs from 670 businesses in the U.S. and Canada. It found that 80 percent of those companies have at least one PC running either Windows 95 or Windows 98. The older operating systems accounted for about 27 percent of operating systems found.

Sorry, not trying to put the others down, but it is best to get your facts together before telling someone something that is not true.

well said.

We're getting $50 for a Win98se OEM license and $100 for license+media, when we can get them, which isn't too often.

We'll I'm just speaking I guess from local knowledge, I was unaware that it was still supported..

WE on the other hand, are no longer allowed to order it, from Microsoft, or get our hands on it in any fashion, in Saskatchewan/Alberta canada.

I'll agree that XP is the primary selling copy, unfortunately they should have removed the fluff, and bugs first, but that's just an opinion..

But definitely, if it is available, it is best to purchase rather than pirate, as Microsoft does need the money.

Good luck on your search, and thanks for the update about the software, always good to know, with how quick things change in this industry..

Oh, and I am a tech..

MCSE,CNA,CCNA, N+,A+, Extreme, and Motorola..

but alas, I try to stay away from OS style enviroments anymore.

If you dont need a legal license for a business or anything just download a copy of windows xp pro.

Legal Copy

You CAN run a burned copy of Win98, but only on ONE condition. You must own a legal, unique license for a newer version of Windows for the PC you run Win98 on.

Companies still run Win98 for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is standardization. Second is MONEY. We spend thousands upgrading almost every dang PC in the company for Y2K. We put Win98SE on all of them.

When we buy a new PC, it comes with whatever flavor Microsoft happens to be selling that month. But because it's a newer version of Windows, we are legally allowed to load the older version on it. We still have to maintain a license for the PC of the newer version.

But, because we've standardized on Win98SE, the help desk doesn't have to worry about Win2k, Win2k3, WinXP, or the newer version that will come out a year after MS promises it will be out.

If you bought a new PC with a newer version, you can legally load Win98. Highly reccomended if you got WinME.

If you built your own PC, you'll need to buy an OEM version of Windows.
