...than an auto mechanic? Hey, I realize there's 1 or 2 honest one's in each state, but come on.

I changed my own headlight bulb. <grin>

I bipassed the mechanic's clutches that time.

but yeah, I would say that for the most part, I do not trust them.

I have a great mechanic.

Well he is an adequate mechanic who fixes his mistakes for free.

I helped his family with some stuff so he helps me out.

He never charges labor.

Rural america has it's benefits, sort of. :D

I've got one of the best mechanics around. He's got his own small place and does good work (plus you don't have to pay all at once).

If you know someone, or have a guy that has a small clientel, then you probably get good service. If you walk into some place where you do not know them, you'd better lube your arse up good, cause you are about to get the shaft.

Truer words were never spoken.

My dad is one one the rare honest mechanics. After all of the things he has had come through the shop that other garages have done I cringe at the thought of seeing anyone I don't know and trust. Your car is expensive and they can fuck it up bad. Dealership mechanics are the absolute worst. The hire the kids just iout of mechanic training cause they are cheap labor. They could care less if they actually know what they are doing.

I make it a point to always and only have my vehicles serviced by an authorized dealer.

I generally get to know the owner of the dealership, which helps.

I find that the only people who get ripped off by car dealers tend to be the uninformed and/or the stupid.

Knowledge is poweh.

You get fucked over far more at your local cosmetics counter than you do by your local auto mechanic.

authorized dealers are usually more expensive, I'm not rolling like that.

And as cars go, I am uninformed and stupid. I'm working on that. Meanwhile, I still have to get my goddamn car fixed.

If all ya'all would drive '72 Buick Skylarks like SaintPeter then
you could fix your own cars. See ya in Hell.

I hate having to use mechanics but I'm at work so much these days that by the time I get home I'm just too bushed to fuck around with machinery so I have to, but your right they fuck you up all the time.

Can I smoke the rubbers in your car? It is polite to ask first.

wait, I have rubbers "in" my car?

where are you?

I always take my car to the same shop. I know what's wrong with it going in, and I kow they'll magically find someting else they want to fix while they are at it.

Adding:

Car salesmen are the worst!

Clarification is needed here:
USED Car SalesPEOPLE are the worst.

I was in sales for a few years. I was the assistant manager at a dealership, working directally with the owner. I had the ability to sell new or used at my discretion. The stuff I'd see from the guys selling used cars was enough to turn me away from it all together.

I sold three used cars in 4 years there. All of them only to my family...and all only after I checked the car out personally.

But...regardless of all of that. To say that any one large group of people are bad is just wrong. <g>

I've run into some fantastic auto mechanics in my time. Some, in my opinion, who actually cater to their female clients in such a way that they don't feel taken advantage of when they go in there.

Those mechanics will go far.

It's just a matter of finding someone you can trust in. Either that, or start riding a bicycle. ;)

I think the mechanical stuff seems to be pretty easy if you can read directions, it's the diagnostics that get me.
