Do you want the police to be social workers?

No. But I'd like to see a damn sight more social workers.

Most officers I’ve met end up being informal social workers anyways.

The fact is that they’re human, and when treated harshly they’ll eventually respond in kind.

If there’s a common characteristic to the people that are treating them than way, eventually anyone would develop a dislike or distrust of all similar people.

I know I wouldn’t want the job.

What, exactly, do social workers do?

Parenting?

They care for people, who, for whatever reason, cannot care for themselves.

The sick, the mentally ill, the old (with or without dementia), those with substance abuse issues including alcohol, abused women and children and those who cannot deal with society without help. There are always more people needing them than the number of social workers available.

In the UK, the Police are often the first responders for those who really need social workers, and it can be a major part of their daily duties.

I’m still wondering how that “unarmed citizen watch patrol” doing traffic stops is going to work out.

I give it six months (max) before the first one pulls out a concealed pistol and shoots someone after feeling threatened.

Of course one or two patrol people will have been killed before they start illicitly arming up.

Social workers attend to troubled people.
Cops attend to troublemakers and protect the public.
Neither are asked or expected to dole out justice.

What have social workers ever cured

that they have to be ubiquitous in 'any' society?

Have they, in any way, supplanted the need for police?

Social workers cannot be police. Police, as social workers, need to be able to refer someone to a social worker urgently but they aren't there 24/7.

In the ultimate, Police are there to use violence to protect society from violence.

Police have been shown to be fundamentally incapable of dealing with the mentally ill, particularly the post-9/11 cop mindset "You WILL respect my authoriteh!".

Eugene Oregon offers a model program for emergency mental health calls...they can and do dispatch trained social workers along with cops.

It seems to be working, much to the dismay of "summary justice" proponents in the RWCJ here.

US Police, perhaps. UK Police are trained to deal with mental health emergencies.

A mentally ill person with a gun is still a person with a gun, just less predictable.

Everyone cried over Old Yeller, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say he didn’t need to be put down.

Most times an officer is not aware of specific circumstances when going into a situation, it’s more a “Go to this address and see what the hell is going on, caller reporting combative suspect, possibly armed” type thing.

We’re going to need a steady supply of social workers...

Yes, they aren't perfect but they're usually pretty good. The problem is that, once taken into custody, it's so hard for them to access proper help and support. The funding just isn't there.

A quick Google found this.
There's a few facts and figures.

I have no idea what 511 means.

If it makes you feel better, I'm not sure what the hell he's talking about either. 511 around here is travel advisories.

Methinks another brain crease smoothed out inside of his noggin today.

I'm wondering how many loonies are going to take this as a license to impersonate a cop. And then stop some woman and rape her.

I wonder who she'll call afterward?
