Do you vote? Be honest! This poll is anonymous.

I'll have 30,000 views and only 135 votes. This is to try to figure out why.

Please feel free to leave your input.

If I read, I vote (unless I think it deserves less than a 3). I don't read much, however.

P.S. In my primary story category, 135 votes for 30,000 views would be a phenomenal response.

I should imagine that large parts of the readership are here for the sex, and have other things on their mind when they finish a story.

If I read, and it deserves at least a 3, I vote -- though I will hesitate on a 3, knowing what that can do to a score and writer motivation.

Personally, I don't vote; voting's about the writer's ego, and it's nice, but as a writer myself I know it doesn't mean all that much in the end. I'd rather write them an e-mail telling them what I liked or didn't like about the story.

(Of course, the more pertinent question is, "How many stories do I finish and actually get round to writing the author of?")

lol! Good point. Thanks.

Of those I read, I vote as long as I can give it a '3' or more. I'll send feedback if my comments aren't as 'glowing' as the PC's left by others.

I'm in the minority though, since I'm not here for the sex stories.

one vote per hundred views is about average for most categories other than incest.

Cute thread, although if people don't vote on stories, they might not vote on you poll :D

I must admit I only vote if I am going to give them a 4 (doing well, want to see more from the author) or a 5 (unique, brings something new, great writing style etc). I usually only leave a PC if the story seems to have a low vote, and shouldn't. Weird, I know.

I vote when i loved or hated the story.

sometimes I won't know any constructive feedback to say.

things like good job or it needs improvement don't really help the writer. unless you say how, and sometimes i don't know what its missing.

I vote on every story that I read. I find that on my stories few vote except the ones that want to give me a one, because of the topic. I also get a lot of hate comments, but very little constructive. I've started to just delete those as they do nothing to help me improve my writing.

I would never give anyone that took the time to write a story anything less than a three. I may comment via e-mail about what I thought was wrong with the story and how it could improve.

I don't believe that anyone who made an effort should be told to never write again.

I almost always vote. Now that I have a few chapters posted and a completely bombed green E, I have a better understanding of the effect of voting and commenting, so I'm very careful how I vote. Nobody knows the top-secret algorithm, and I'm not a math genius, but looking carefully at my early numbers and getting into it a bit with a math-y sort (and I'm sure I'll be corrected as soon as I say this,) it seems to take seven 5-stars to counter one 1-star and by that I mean get the coveted red H, a 4.5, you need that balance. And we all know it's all about the red-H. Continuing on with this math, it takes five 5-stars to counter one 2-star, three 5-stars to counter one 3-stars and two 5-stars to counterbalance one 4-star.

So, with my own feelings of getting a 75% (4-stars), which in my book is the equivalent of barely passing, I'm loathe to give a story anything less than a 4. If I feel it really needs work then I usually just back out leaving it untouched. Once I commented critically because someone came here asking for feedback, but later, I regretted it.

And yeah, being an anal real-life 'A' student, my majority 4's here leave me pretty unmotivated to post even though I have a couple of readers waiting with baited breath for the rest of my story!

I totally agree with you assessment, but not your math. Three 5's equal 15 plus one 1 equal 16 divided by four votes gives a rating of four. I won't give less than a three and that story has to be really bad.

What Driphoney said was seven (7) 5's plus one 1 reaches hot (36 divided by 8 = 4.5).

Which do you do more - public comment, email, vote, nothing?
Which do you prefer people did to your stories - public comment, email or vote? Or do you have feedback and votes switched off?

That would depend on who's leaving the pc's, emails and votes! :D

Nah. As I'm getting the comments (or I should say when I'm getting comments) they really give me a charge, but unfortunately, eventually I'm just left looking at numbers when I open my submissions page and see the listing of my stories, so my brain gives more credit to votes than it should.

That being said, given my scores, if I didn't have the fantastic feedback I've gotten by a few people, I probably would never get around to finishing my story (it's finished, but due to their feedback, I need to change it, hence it's in a holding pattern currently!) and might never post again. Then again, someday the writing muse might strike with a vengeance and I'd need somewhere to let folks read my story, wouldn't I? :)

Yeah, I'm guilty of this too. I submitted a story under an alt, and the score really sucks. Within 24 hours it has over 20,000 views (yeah, incest), over 100 votes, no public comments and glowing emails. But the number of votes is too high for it to be a random troll or three, so it must really suck.

Oh, I don't know about that. I hear they skewer incest writers.

But me, well, I have just this very thought with my green E. After several sweeps and the fact that I have over a hundred votes, I just have to accept that though a few creative types and others liked it, for the most part the average Lit reader thought it stunk. :( The really sad part for me was that I thought it would be the one thing I'd post that would be well received.

Oh well. [shrug]

A green E here is an invitation to 1 bombs.

Well, I would agree with you except for all the sweeps and I've had about 30 or so votes taken off that story in the last month. I figure those were the trolls. My average has not budged. 4.06. Yuk.

However, I do feel a green E gets a tougher scrutiny by everyone. Instantly everyone's a critic, wondering what on earth was so special about the selected story. Suddenly their standards head north. If they had read it normally, they might go, "Hey! Better than the usual fare around this place." But once it's set apart then it's, "What? This crap story? This doesn't get close to my favorite author!"

Did I just agree with you or disagree? Think I did both! Past my bedtime, nothing's making sense.

Heard of a red H but.......

A green E here is an invitation to 1 bombs.

What is a Green E? Yeah I vote and this is actually my undercover name so i can writes bout incest stories and such and not hear any grief from friends or family who actually know my other what i'd consider my True Profile here

What is a Green E?
I got the following off the faq. I don't know how to link things. They say "yellow E's" but it's really green. Must have been yellow originally or something. If you want you see what they look like, then head to the faq, or check out sr71plt's page to get a good look at a variety. He's great.

What do the colored icons beside stories mean?

The yellow NEW's (New) denote stories which have recently been published on Literotica.com.

The red H's (Hot) denote stories which have received 10 or more votes from readers, and maintain an average vote of 4.5 out of 5 or better.

The yellow E's (Editor) denote "Editor's Choice" stories. These are pieces that we really like - just our opinion.

The green W's (Winner) are next to stories that have been chosen by readers as winners in our Monthly, Yearly, or Special contests.

In the future, we may add other icons. As we do, we'll add them to the FAQ.

Thanks a bunch Drip Darling
