I'm undecided that "if he runs, he wins." For starters, there are a lot of ambitious people in the party, and I don't think all of them are going to stand idly by and allow Trump to waltz to the nomination again. They treated him with kid gloves in 2016 because no one took him seriously. That won't happen again.

Not completely true. Congress can act and prevent him from running for Federal office in the future. The votes are there in both Houses. It is up to Mitch to decide. That means as I understand it...as soon as Georgia certifies their vote, the control of the Senate switches. If Georgia certifies the vote say Jan 18th, impeachment AND removal is possible before the 20th because after all...the Republicans have shown the Senate trial does NOT require the witness phase...only the vote phase. Isn't karma a fucking bitch?

The GOP made a major error in 2016 when they allowed Trump a populist from the right with hardly any connection to hijack their party. The Democrats almost made the same mistake allowing Sanders a left wing populist (and not a Democrat) to do the same.

Both parties need to get their internal discipline sorted out. By 2024 I am pretty certain that they will.

Well it looks like the divisive identity politics are in fact important for significant number of voters in the right who would have hard time giving their vote to anyone of colour or woman in principle, twisting her views in predictable ways to be "righteously" outraged. Also it seems likely there could be significant rifts between trump and establishment wings within the party itself potentially (nearly) splitting it in two for good. That creates quite complex landscape to navigate.

The party leadership can set up rules to limit the field, but they can’t point to an individual and say, “not you.” Participants in the primaries and caucuses choose the delegates, and the delegates elect the party’s candidate.

The leadership is bound to accept whoever they come up with. Dark horses would never happen if they weren’t. Trump was a dark horse in 2016. So was Obama in 2008.
