Do you think that 9-11 should have it's own Holiday called Patriot's Day?

I wouldn't exactly call it a holiday, and haven't heard anybody else refer to it that way.

I dont think we should reduce this horrible day into a Holiday that becomes a day where kids go to the beach.....
people have BBQ parties.....

and

in a few years we see ads on TV for Patriot's Day sales......

I can just see it now......

Come buy a Toyota
for the Patriot's Sale

Only 911 down.

what do you think?

Agreed. The best thing to do is to go on with things as normal, but make an effort to remember what happened and why and who lost their lives.

I think you grouped too many things together at once... the commercialism of it should not be a part of it.

but some sort of recognition yes... there should be

We don't celebrate April 19 or 22, do we

Why would it be called patriots day? For the USA-PATRIOT act?

I honestly don't know what I think about this. But the best solution I've heard so far is to move Flag Day from June to Sept 11th, and continue to celebrate Flag Day with the knowledge it also represents what happened in 2001. Flag Day isn't a "take off work" kind of holiday. And the U.S. Flag seems to have become the symbol of 9/11/2001.

just a thought.

I still can't figure out why. We didn't waive flags after OKC. So what? We celebrate a country that would allow a terrorist attack on it's peope?

What a great idea. Why not call it Bin Laden Day? It's not enough that the bombing has succeeded in disrupting the American way of life enough - i.e. the Patriot Act, the increasingly racist anti-Arab sentiment, etc. Let's give the man a holiday too.

Spin..... the OKC bombing was a domestic thing. On 9/11, it was obvious that it was a foreign power that had attacked. All the flag waving was a collective effort to show the world that we were not beaten by what happened.

Your question about "We celebrate a country that would allow a terrorist attack on it's peope?

That's a stupid question.....

The timing is all wrong. We already get a long weekend the first week of September for Labor day, what we need is to find something to plug into February or March or something.

And I will support no Holiday that does not give me a 3 Day weekend and extra discounts at Walmart.

Actually, in Massachusetts (and in Maine, which was part of MA at the time), the third Monday in April is Patriot's Day.

It's something to commemorate, not celebrate. You know, that whole "Those whe forget the past are doomed to repeat it" thing.

Yeah? We didn't know for a while that it was domestic. The next day, that afternoon we weren't waving the flag.

Patriot day? FUCK THAT! FUCK IT UP BUSH'S STUPID ASS!

If he's going to name a holliday it should be either:

Let the eagle soar day

Or the full version

TERRORISM! TERRORISM! T-E-R-R-O-R-I-S-M! Aaaauugghhh Let teh Eagle Soar!!!!111111ljarkthafjlghai DAY!

I think this is taking martyrdom a little too far. There should be some dignity for the martyrs, but right now it seems that they're still being used.

waves

It's just another day.

Maybe they should cancel Labor Day (as if anyone ever cared) and then install Patriot Day.

:)

~waves flag, looks stoic, then distracted

Is it almost election time again? Do you think Bush is doing this because he wants the families to vote for him? I mean seriously. I feel sorry for the people that lost loved ones.. but this is going a bit far.

I'm with Siren on this.. don't turn this into another "day off from school/work" holiday.

My flag will be flying.. But not because Bush told me to.. but because it's what I do.... everyday

Heh. It was going to far nine months ago, six months ago and three months ago.

Spin.... take a valium.....

Everyone take a look at the article that was posted. Bush did not turn 9/11 into a holiday. He turned 9/11/2002 into a holiday. And that was at the request of Congress back in December. In fact, Congress requested the day be an ongoing holiday every year, and Bush only designated a commeration be held in 2002.

Even this year, it is not a true federal holiday. Flags will be flown at half-mast, but federal employees will not get the day off of work. I don't know about y'all, but I'll be working like any other day.

But you know what, I'll probably turn my TV on that morning and watch a bit of what people around the country are doing to honor the people that died. Then I'll go back to work.

Noooooo... Then summer would drag on a few days longer.

Don't give them any ideas about cancelling Holidays. My employer is only giving us 9 paid holidays for 2003 (well, ok, and 2 weeks vacation plus flex time and paid personal time off, but those aren't holidays) - that's not near enough.

Maybe it should be a whole week... Like spring break in college, we'll just take the entire week off from Labor Day thru September 11th and conclude the entire thing with massive fireworks displays and Pig Roasts!!!
