Do you specialize in one catagory

I was curious as to how many authors either specialize in one category, or post in a couple or several different categories?

When I first started submitting I wrote and posted to the BDSM category. I did this because those were of interest to me. I was received well, especially considering how tough the BDSM crowd can be. I was only a player and I am sure I missed the many nuances that a real BDSMer would catch.

Over time I decided to try incest stories because those seemed very popular. Again I was received well and decided to branch out to see how I may fair in other categories, some with mixed reviews, but answering my questions as to whether I could pull off stories in other categories.

I have refrained from submitting in some categories, such as Loving Wives, because I haven’t found an original story line. In fact I’m not sure there is a fresh story line available and so I may never get to one of those stories.

So dear authors. What works for you? One category, several? Do you hold back a story because it is just your version of the same story line or do you post it and see where it goes?

As a writer, I would like to be able to fit into any category and make it seem I know their world intimately.

As a sex-mad fiend, I read and write what turns me on most, and this is much more restricted.

What emerges is a compromise between those two.

I'm actually more likely to write "my version of the same storyline" because I get tired of the cliches in a category. I suppose most of what I write could legitimately be placed in the humor and satire category, because I tend to favor twists on basic stories that give something other than I lead the reader to expect at first.

I think you're right, and that's why Loving Wives stories need, more than any of the others, to depend on lavishly depicted love and interesting characters. One of my favorite in that category is Sheath's "My Music Man," featuring a wildly sexy country singer named Adam, with whom the protagonist ends up doing stuff that would get any performer arrested IRL. (Sheath, if you're out there, you can lay another Music Man story on us any old time).

Apropos of nothing, when I was living in Lake Charles, LA one of the biggest stories in town was when Snoop Doggy Dogg got arrested on stage. It was not, however, for doing his wife in front of hundreds of assembled, shrieking fans--it was some battery or weapons charge which I forget, but has been well documented.

As for my stories, I've submitted one Mature and two Incests, one of which is still pending. My future submissions will probably be in Group Sex and Non-human. I probably will never submit, say, a Gay Male/Lesbian/BDSM/anal story unless under some circumstance I don't forsee at this point.

The majority of my stories are in the Mature category, because those are the kinds of stories that interest me the most. But I've also posted stories in the incest, first time, group sex, and romance category. It's good to write about something else every so often, get out of whatever rut you're in.

But if you keep coming up with good ideas, keep thinking up new and exciting ways to scratch your particular itch, go for it. I keep writing Mature stories because that's what I like, and what I'm good at.

for me personally i find it hard to write about things i have no knowledge in..so i find that i lean heavily towards the BDSM sector, though my strength is actually Gorean based this is as close as i can get.

i have found in reading through some of the Stories held within literotica that many lack the substance and real power that knowledge holds...they lack depth and charisma...some may say the same for mine.

But i truely feel that if you have a sound knowledge about what you write it will be better recieved than if it is just words upon a screen

Can't pick just one

I don't think writing erotica is as binding to one theme as other genres such as mysteries or science fiction. I myself may start a story a particular category, say incest, but I prefer to weave the adventures of the main character through whatever activities I see as entertaining before returning to the label of origion.....I have one project under development that concerns a young woman's vacation in Hawaii, she is staying with family there so that's the incest hook, she also explores many other sexual situations which will cover most of the recognized categories in some fashion or another.....*****'s a buffet, so to speak, don't just load up on carbs and forget to leave room for dessert.....

I write in several categories. Most of my stuff has at least an undertone of romance, and several are there, but some seemed to fit better in another. I totally agree with WH about story lines. I think it likely that most possible scenarios for anything have already found their way to print in some fashion or other. That doesn't mean another author can't write the same scenario in a different manner. The movie industry does it all the time.

They do say that variety is the spice of life. I've posted in several different categories, simply because that's how the story worked. I've got one in NonConsent, and I have no real love of rape.

It just depends on how the story works best. Although, I do have three in Anal and two in Exhibitionist, so maybe there are some leanings...

My tendencies are to experiment with different ideas, so I flip from genre to genre.

However, I found that I've recieved seven or eight requests for a sequel to my incest story, so I finally finished a sequel to my satisfaction. It took a while took create a plausable sequel because I never intended there to be one in the first place--but it's now one of my favorite stories.

Ironically, one story that I intended to be the first in a series was not well recieved and I wasn't especially happy with it, so I never bothered to write a sequel.

One story is autobiographical, more-or-less--I'll leave you to guess which one. Some, I've made up from a pastiche of various disparate memories. Other stories are one-hundred percent fictional in nearly every element.

When I look at my stories, clearly some seem to lack the polish of the other stories--especially some of the experimental ones. For example, I wrote a rather extreme non-consent story under another pseudonym.

It occurs to me that perhaps one idea is to keep writing specific types of stories under specific pseudonyms, so as to create an association.

Do I specialize? Yes.

I've only posted 5 of my erotic stories so far, and only 4 of those here. So my overall themes may not be strongly evident yet, though once everyone on my hard drive is posted it should be.

My thing is for stories about living nude. It isn't everything I write, but it is a good portion of it. There is often a Science Fiction or Fantasy angle to it. This may be stressed or it may be a very light background element.

I don't write stroke. I go in for as deep of characterization and plot as I can pull out of whatever I am writing about at a given moment.

A number of my stories lack any explicit sex, whilst still being erotica. I don't see any need to go in mechanics in order to turn people on. I am writing to tell a story and possibly set a mood, not to aid in rapid below the waist hand gestures. ;)

I could easily write non erotic and in fact have done so before. However I prefer the erotic genres as they give me more freedom to express my thought without risk of censure.

I have tried various categories. Mostly in order to explore my own limits, my own fantasy. I generally read only one or two categories, but try to broaden my scope by writing in different ones.
Sometimes it's daunting writing about something you haven't tried. However, while i normally don't care at all about votes, it is interesting to see if the readers in that category accept the story, which they normally do. Which is nice.

I've done that, but I can tell you from experience, it's a hard sell in this milieu.

Mine fall primarily into either Sci-fi/Fantasy or Novels & Novellas, the former because that's what I'm most familiar with as a writer and the latter because they're monstrously long stories that run across so many other categories.

The one I'm currently posting in weekly installments, for instance, is going to be 15+ chapters of pseudo-historical pirate smut that starts off incest and NC and will gradually include other naughtiness. The latest chapter just went up:

I was worried that the content in Infernal might automatically get it sent to Extreme, though. ;)
