I want to know, definitively, if I'm a freak or if I have brothers and sisters in this tastiness.

Yes.

Also honeydew, a little. Or lime.

The hubs thinks it's weird. I think it's delicious and brings out the watermelon flavor much more due to salt's ability to electrify the ions of the-...

I'm a nerd.

Anyway, it's good isn't it?!

I'm trying to think what else - mango holds up really wonderfully in salty dishes.

Yeah it's really good. Weird, sure.

OK.

To a non-American, the title of this thread sounds like some kind of innuendo-ridden euphemism.

It sounds like it to me, too. And I am American. :D

"Hey, I'd like to salt his watermelon, if you know what I mean."

"Hey, I'd like to fluff his garfield, if you know what I mean."

Ten points to the first person who gets that last one.

I cannot imagine watermelon without salting. Good taste.......;)

Tomatoes fresh from the garden (or, in my case, the farmers market) get a light sprinkle as I munch them like apples.

yes, i always salt my watermelon, but i thought that was strictly a southern thing. *shrug* learn something new everyday.

Yep. I salt any melon, including cantelope, I salt my apples, I salt grapefruit, I salt ... salt makes fruit taste better.

I've never heard of salting fruit.

It sounds counterproductive.

salt always makes sweet taste better. Take a look at any cookie recipe, there will be a teensy bit of salt in it.

Salt on any melon-- or even better, bacon. Or ham sliced thin.

You can get a chili salt mixture in Mexican grocery stores that is great on oranges and mangoes and Jicama root...

cheese with grapes, apples, pears, melons...

pickles and ice cream... Actually-- I have never eaten pickles and ice cream!

Salt on fruits is a typically southern thing, but it's spreading. I've seen quite a few people in Cali do it, when I lived there.

I will say, however, that to my Puerto Rican husband, I'm weird.

And now it's time for my nap, because the baby is finally asleep and my curiosity has been sated!!

Yes, well, when I eat melons. I'm not a big melon fan, but salt definitely brings out the flavour.

I will say that I remember seeing kids salt apples when I first moved to the South, and thought it was damned odd. I tried it, and sorta got it, but I still think it is odd. I prefer my apples unsalted.

I also like pepper on my french fries.
