If so, would you be willing to enlighten someone who knows NOTHING about it by answering a few questions?

Questions were answered and story has been completed. Thanks so much to everyone who helped!

I used to play WoW... and I really miss it.

we dropped our subscription when my wife lost her job; 2 years ago (it costs about $15 a month to play, so an unemployed person playing is in denial about their situation).

as for your questions.

1) You select your gender, race, class, pick out some details like face, tatoos, & hair color, and then you spend half an hour trying to figure out a name that you like which hasn't already been used on the server.

2)Actions you do during the game? you actually spend a lot of time traveling (or used to at least), riding zeplins, gryphons, wyverns ect. After you level up a bit you get your own mount, to start with each race has there own kind, but mixing and matching is possible, and there are many varieties of mounts that can be gotten with some effort. As you rise in level you get better mounts, until eventually you are flying your own gryphon or whatever.

Aside from traveling, the most common thing seems to be"grinding;" repetetively fighting similar enemies over and over in order to collect drops. Some quests require grinding, improving your crafting skills either requires lots and lots of grinding, or huge amounts of gold. Grinding can also include fighting enemies in order to access rescources they hang out near, like ore or herbs.

Speaking of crafting there are many different craft skills, of which a given character only has two (usually one craft skill, and one supporting gathering skill). Craft skills allow you to make a wide variety of things, namely different grades of armor, weapons, potions, enchantments to be placed on armor & weapons, ect.

More advanced players also participate in raids; large multiplayer events orchestrated by guilds in order to tackle the very hardest dungeons where the very best equipment is found. These guilds of course is where the social part of the game gets thick. The drama can get pretty heavy sometimes, particularly for the people who try to run things, who end up being a bit like moderators of their guilds.

before i get too carried away with nostalgia and sour grapes, lets move on to your next question;

3)I haven't played in two years, but I've discovered that some parlance changes from server to server, Never the less here's a few I can remember:

Ding! (I gained a level)
Gratz! (congratulations)
LOL (somethings don't change)
WOOT (yay)
Mob (monster)
Pulling Aggro (depending on your party role; making sure the monsters attack you, or accidentally doing enough damage that the monsters attack you instead of the Tank)
Tank (the person in the party that you want the monsters to attack, because he has a little more health and a lot more armor, and in a party, the immediate attention of the party healer).
DPS (damage per second; either refering to how much damage a weapon does, how much you are able to get your character to do, or in a party, the person who is designated as the heavy hitter, who tries to do enough damage to take foes down, while trying to avoid taking 'aggro' away from the 'Tank')
Ninja (to simplify; taking loot that you shouldn't)
Pwn (a misspelling of own; to take an enemy down so fast you make it look easy, especially another player in a PVP arena or setting. "I totally pwned that guy." or "Pwn it like you own it.")

This is just a little tip of the iceberg for you. Just a scratch. My suggestion is that you have someone who plays currently proofread/ edit for you.

I think Satindesire still plays, and I have no doubt others on here still play too. Surely they can help you more.

WOW! (Pun not intended). Thanks so much Stag, that is exactly what I needed. I may still make my game fictional but it's nice to have a general idea of what a popular game includes.

Sincere thanks - K

I do play, and I'll be happy to type up some stuff for you ASAP.

For now I must go to bed, as my sleeping medication finally kicked in and I keep making weird typos, so I'm gonna hit the sack before I pass out on the keyboard.

Info coming soon, KayKay!

Hoo snap, zombie thread resurrected!

Does anyone, including KerBear, need/want more info about WoW? I took a necessary hiatus from Lit and absolutely brain-bombed about this thread, and to KerBear, I totally humbly apologize for completely bailing on you.

Oh goodness, no need to apologize. I actually just ended up creating an imaginary game, so I didn't need to worry about getting details correct.

But feel free to use this as a WoW thread. :)

How is life as new Mama x 2?

Yeah Satin, I would like to know what changed in game since 3 years ago, I stopped playing just before WotLK came out. Left some pretty decked out characters too.
I went around playing some other games, last being LotRO I got bored of once again and now just messing with browser games now and then.
I am wondering which MMO is worth going back to (I have some decent endgame characters in AO, AoC, WoW and LotRO) and picking up where I left.

Life as Mamax2 is...fucking busy. Pardon my French. I am constantly doing -something-, because my parents still depend on me a great deal as well, and not Mister is going through a deep (read: bottomless) depression and can't seem to shake it enough to help me take care of the kids or do chores/regular household stuff. Right now I've got 5 people depending on me for literally everything. So. I'm exhausted.:(

Sorry to be such a buzzkill! I love my kids, I just wish I had some me time. Sometimes the universe can't revolve around us though.

Hm. What changed with the Cata expansion and patches. Well, for one thing, the patches are like mini-expansions now. I know there was some of that in Wrath Days, with the Obsidian Sanctum etc. But it seems like pretty much every big patch now opens up more and more content.

But this is how WoW is different:

You can't be in Vanilla WoW anymore. With "The Shattering" (The event I'll get into that changed the world of Azeroth forever) you can buy and stay at the level cap and content of Burning Crusade or Wrath, but the base "vanilla" game is almost nothing like what it used to be.

The Devs redesigned the entire base game, with more cohesive plot-line based quests and less go-here-kill-this quests. Even the fewer in number go-here-kill-this quests Make Sense (finally!) and don't feel like "filler" quests anymore. The entire world was changed with The Shattering, which means about 75% of the vanilla areas were altered, even geographically.

Here's a map of Vanilla WoW:

Map of Burning Crusade WoW:

Note the new areas opened up on the map, now they are the starting zones of the then-new races the Draenei (Alliance) and the Blood Elves (Horde). For those who don't know much about WoW, the level cap was boosted to 70.

Note "Northrend", the northernmost continent that opened up a new zone to level in. The level cap was moved up to 80 then.

Now...the Shattering. (Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq4Y7ztznKc)

Here's an interesting article that talks about some of the changes that Cata brings to the game AND changes that the user can also do, like "Faction changing"

If so, would you be willing to enlighten someone who knows NOTHING about it by answering a few questions?

Situation:

A character in a story I'm working on is a 40+ man who plays the game in his spare time (though he's lost his job so 'spare time' is most of the day now). He's not a hardcore gamer but he's OK at it and knows all the lingo and such.

Questions:

1. Do you create your own characters or is there a set number to choose from?
2. What is an example of some kind of action you perform during the game? (Keep it in Keroin dummy talk, thanks)
3. What's some slang that WoW players use?

Head's up: I don't need elaborate explanations, as this will only take up a couple of paragraphs at most.

Thanks in advance!
K

1. Do you create your own characters or is there a set number to choose from?
You have a choice between 6 races and 10 classes, you must also pick a side in the "war" Horde or Alliance. depending on the server members of the opposite faction can attack you (Pvp = player vs player server or normal). once you decide your race and class you can customize your character face and body size with some preset faces.

2. What is an example of some kind of action you perform during the game?
The most common activity you find casual players doing is there "dailies" (solo quests) or 5man Dungeon runs. a faction in the game may offer something you want such as a Mount, Pet, weapon and so forth. these items will cost say 50 tokens each and taking the 30mins to hour to complete the "dallies" will reward 15 tokens or so, you will need to do them every day.

3. What's some slang that WoW players use?
this one was already covered well enough above hope this helps.

1. Do you...

Thanks Volvin.

I guess I'd better add something to my original post to let folks know this story has been written (a long time ago) and edited and sent out to (hopefully) be published. So I'm no longer seeking advice.

Sorry!
