Do you have to mention the bio mom in a stepmom story?

I'm in the very early stages of writing a stepmom story. A guy goes on a business trip and while he's gone, his wife of 2 years decides to "discipline" their 19 year old daughter. Her bio mom isn't important and won't be showing up in the story. Should I mention her or just gloss over it. The daughter and step mom hate each other btw.

If the bio mom doesn't add anything to the story, why mention her?

I agree with @curioustxn for the most part. But I personally would leave the bio mom as a potential character for future adventures. Maybe Mom eventually finds out how the stepmother is disciplining her daughter and is into it...

But not knowing anything else about your plan for your story, that's just my one cent.

This is a good point. While there is little value in adding a character that has no role in the story, (and may confuse the reader), adding the natural emotional conflicts that sometimes occur between a bio-mom and stepmom, could be a backstory in its self. Two women who are at odds with each other because of the daughter, drawn to each other sexually, perhaps because of the daughter.

I could figure it having a place in the story, if the daughter hates her step-mom but likes the "discipline" (as you put it) but wishes it was her bio mom administering it, and fantasizing about that.
