Few outside America, and many within it, fail to understand the reverence those who value freedom have for the American flag. It's a symbol that expresses our love, and our grief... for our dead, and for our respect for freedom. Those who would desecrate the flag and mock our love of freedom we take as simply being freeloaders, who are able to mock and desecrate because of the very people and ideals that they offend. Pitifully, we who hold these values can only feel sorry for them and for their lives without these values.

So you're going to spend Independence Day bitching about how much you hate Americans?

I've never felt the need to hang a fag. The idea is appealing but too much like work.

Few inside American realise that other countries do not have the same feelings for their own flags.

After all, the Union Jack started appearing on panties back in the 1960s. But even I was surprised that my very young grandson has disposable diapers printed with the Union Jack 'because of the Jubilee'!

Edited for PS: Few people in England know proper flag etiquette. A few hundred yards away a house has a flagpole that is showing the US flag today in tribute to the 4th of July. But in recent weeks that flagpole has shown the Maltese Flag, The English cross of St George, the NATO flag, and on the day of the Jubilee Pageant was flying the Royal Standard! That should only be flown if Her Majesty is actually present. She wasn't. She was on the River Thames.

Brits don't need to be so rah rah rah jingoistic about symbols. We KNOW we're better than everyone else, we don't need to shout about it.

You can find the American flag on many different products here. There seems to be a division between the hard cores that follow the official flag rules religiously and those that are a little more relaxed in their treatment of the flag.

Freedom looks good on paper.

Happy Independence Day. We always put one out for the day, but don't have a permanent place to put it.

HipHipHooray for our Freedom, too many take it for granted.

I see other countries flags everywhere in this area.....so to me, your statement is a slight generalization...

There are protocols for flying flags. On certain days in the UK ONLY the Union Flag should be flown (or the flagpole left bare).

The protocols for treatment of the Stars and Stripes are possibly the strictest of any, but even US citizens break them.

Boy Scouts and Girl Guides know better.

Little known fact:

The colors on the American flag were chosen due to all the blood and semen left behind on Betsy Ross' blue bed spread after the founding fathers buggered the shit out of each other.

True story.

She fucked Stonewall Jackson, right?

One does not 'just decide to be patriotic', and put a flag out. Patriotism is a deep belief in country, and the ideals of it. Just deciding to do something is stopping by McDonalds to buy a cheeseburger. Patriotism is accepting the fact you may die in support of an idea.
