The once and ONLY time I ever peeked under someone's tarp on the back of their truck, there was this HUGE dog that practically swallowed my face! That cured me!

Some companies will put those tarps up on wood when it's going to rain
Also, turbines and other large pieces of electrical/mechanical equipment..
Basically, anything that'll get hurt by rain

In Chicago theres a difference between what the garabage semi's and normal semi...

If you look at them closely you can usually tell...
If they've got some kind of shovel like attatchment, they're a digger
If they've got a claw like thing, they're a mover
if they've got a big compartment like a dump truck it's an earth mover
etc, etc, etc, just look at the machine, think about what you could do with it (I mean realistically, not crushing your boss' car or something) and that's probably what it's for.

Yep, I used to be curious! NEVER AGAIN! I was following a very large dump truck in the middle of summer, on I70 in downtown Indy, on my way to work. It reeked sooo bad I could hardly stand it. I assumed it was trash. Wrong! It had a tarp on it.....until the tarp flew back.....Holly shit! It was literally a truckload of dead pigs. I thought I was going to be sick. I had nightmares about that for days. I have no clue why or where it was headed, but it the was the most disgustingly sad sight I'd ever seen.
