Do you ever comment anonymously?

I have sometimes left a couple of comments on stories that included some constructive criticism. Sometimes I wonder if it pisses them off and they end up 1-bombing me. I don't know.

Any experiences?

I live for anonymity. I signed my own marriage certificate with an X.

But when it comes to leaving comments on Lit stories, I always provide my username. Some things are just too important.

I'm using a pseudonym already. Since on the rare occasions that I comment I don't trash stories and I'm not mean, I've no reason not to use it.

I don't tend to comment on a story unless there are the following conditions:

1.) A writer has asked for comments or feedback, either on the forums or in the intro to the story itself in which case I may provide some constructive criticism along with what I really enjoyed about the story

2.) I'm leaving a glowing comment about how much I loved the story.

People are out here sharing their creative work for free. I'm never going to comment on someone's story just to drag it. If I don't like it, it's not like there is nothing else on this site for me to click on.

As such, I think I'll always feel comfortable commenting using my name. I haven't felt compelled to comment anonymously yet, anyway.

I don't make a lot of comments. But when I do, I post with handle so everyone knows who said what.

Yes, you most definitely run the risk of getting one-bombed if you decide to leave (even marginally) critical comments under others' submissions. Therefore, if you want to continue commenting in a critical manner, I'd urge you to get an alternative account just for this purpose.

Otherwise you might end up having to deactivate the voting feature on your own submissions just to spoil the games the especially thankful beneficiaries of "constructive criticism" love to play.

Well fuk. I tried to turn it into a compliment sandwich. Maybe I'll get lucky and they take it well.

I kind of thought engaging with other stories would always be a good thing. But it does suck if it comes at your own expense.

I have on contest stories only because I've collected a fair amount of trolls, both readers, and forum members/ghosters over the years so I don't want someone getting bombed because they see I liked their story.

But on random stories I use my name for the rare instances I comment these days.

Why would I try to hide my identity? If I feel strongly enough to comment, I use my name.

I’ve left a comment on the majority of stories I’ve read and never anonymously.

I didn’t leave any comments when I was just a reader and it was only after I began submitting stories I began to leave comments. I admit when I first began leaving comments I was unsure of leaving my name when I was being (justifiably) critical but after a while I couldn’t be bothered about possibly being 1-bombed. I’d like to think any bombs would be removed by sweeps but I’ve given up believing that will happen.

Sometimes I do leave a minimal comment just saying I enjoyed the story but never any of that crap about best story ever etc.

By the same token I have never, and would never, leave a comment such as I’ve seen saying “the story sucks” or other more abusive comments in the same vein. No matter how bad the story may be the writer has put a lot of time in its construction and doesn’t deserve to be kicked in the teeth.

I do try and leave comments which will be seen by the writer as constructive and if I do have something detrimental to say I always find something good to give a balanced view.

We all comment anonymously. I doubt there's more than a handful (if any) Lit subscribers who use their own name. So using your fake identity is no more honest or forthright or important than just commenting as anon.

I've had more than a few Commenters thank me for enabling Anonymous Comments for my stories. And I often get the most useful comments from anon. I suspect many of my anon commenters are fellow writers.

My first name is really Millie, my middle initial is D (no not Dynamite) and don't use my last name. My adoptive father gave me the nickname Dynamite, and 90lbs of dynamite, if you saw me you'd get it. Yes, I'm an anon behind the pen, but still not its the only me online. I have email, a webpage, and writers Facebook listing. While I'm anon, I am still visible.

But hey, I'm not inviting anyone from the net for tea and crumpets, beer and skittles, or wine and cheese. Even so, if they want to contact me, they have plenty of ways to get that done.

And who would they be contacting besides an anonymous user of multiple internet accounts? Nothing whatsoever can be verified from your description of yourself.

I'm not advocating against being anonymous. The internet is a very dangerous place to be known any other way. I'm just saying who the hell cares who any of us are when we've just made our identity up?

Sure. Sometimes. Most of the time I post comments under my name SimonDoom. Usually, when I comment, it's a positive comment, and I want people to know who's leaving the comment.

There have been a few times I've left anonymous comments, for different reasons. I see nothing wrong with that. The Site allows people to do that and in my opinion, people should feel free to use the Site's features.

I received a comment recently from someone whose bio stated he/she was a LE author but this name was a second account used entirely for comments. Essentially the commenter was anonymous and I could not tie the comments to a writer or his/her stories.

So why bother? Either use your handle or be anonymous, but don’t use a second handle just for comments. Makes you look open when actually you are not.

Sorry, on a "let's play" Web site like Literotica, not using your writing name to make comments on other's stories is just good sense. Why invite extra vendetta trolling or fall into the "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" voting, which really does make ratings/voting/commenting useless.

I rarely comment on a story unless it was a really good story. I have commented as me on some stories.

What's the point?

I really don’t see the point in commenting anonymously. After all, one’s user name is certainly by the vast majority not one’s true name either. By commenting anonymously you prevent any feedback from the author. Don’t you want that feedback if you feel compelled to comment on the story.

Well, probably no, if you are commenting under an account you also write under and your comment isn't glowingly favorable. You should be able to realize what could go wrong with that.

When I give criticism, I ask myself, would I want to get this criticism? If I don't think I would, I won't give it.

But I know my taste and judgment are not everyone else's, and it might be that what I think is perfectly valid criticism might be seen as too harsh or impolite for someone else. Perfectly in the case of an author with whom I've communicated. It might be worth giving the comment, but not at the expense of a possibly damaging a correspondence.

I think there are many author/commenters who do this.

Plus, why is it necessary for anyone to see the attribution for a comment? Why does it matter? Many people, especially non-authors, want to use Literotica as anonymously as possible. That makes perfect sense to me.

It's not my usual practice, but don't see anything wrong with it.

The Site owners have made clear that if it become impossible to leave anonymous comments, the number of comments would plummet to a much smaller level, because most comments are anonymous.

My view is this: by commenting anonymously you sure as hell are giving the impression as the cliché goes you can dish it out but you can’t take it. To my mind that is an ignoble position to take. In my latest story I have a significant character disappear from the narrative. One anonymous reader opined that he (or she I guess but I suspect he) was disappointed by that plot development, and that the subsequent story line no longer holds any interest to him. I think that was a fair enough and honest comment to make. I offered a reply as to why the story went that way, but of course I have no clue as to whether that anonymous reader would come back to see my rebuttal.

My other point is if you truly find a story truly absolutely atrocious and I would suggest plenty of stories definitely fall into that category what satisfaction does it give you to announce it. Why bother? Especially why do it anonymously?

There are a whole lot of individual opinions about such as this among the users of the Web site, I'm sure.

As others have noted, most everyone is posting here anonymously. Having an account name like "Liksitbig" doesn't change that.

MY point was that an author making unfavorable comments on another author's stories under his/her author account is very likely not going to like the lash back that can happen on their own stories--and that there will be authors here who agree with that and quite reasonably won't use their author handles to comment unfavorably on the stories of others. Of course there are some too, like the long gone Mr. Johnson, who delighted in unloading in his authorial name.

A whole lot of individual opinions here on how to do anything.
