Do the votes bleed off after a period of time?

I was just wondering because I looked at my poetry vote counts, and they have declined, in effect there are less votes there now, than there were when last I looked. And since it is poetry, I don't think that it is Laurel deleting 1's.

Also, I guess my story isn't going to make it in the contest. It only has 18 votes to it, and has stalled out as far as views are concerned. Too bad really, it wasn't any real threat to win, but it would have been nice just to have finished the race. LOL

I'd say it's cuz most people reading it Agree with the Average. I'll read a story and if it's above what I think I’ll vote. it's below what i think it is I'll vote. If it's rating is what I think. I may or may not vote. as far as your story being read. Promote it. Like you just did.

Bit of a threadjack here...

I'm not sure if I quite made out what Aaron was saying, but it sounds like there's a way to see each story's score. Color me newbish, but...how, if it doesn't make it onto the "Top Stories" list?

Just because it's poetry, Laurel does not let fraudulent voting go on there. My poetry (well, kind of poetry) gets cleaned out of the bad ones too. Or at least I hope that's what it is. :D

I have no idea what Aaron said either but to answer your question, each story will have its score next to it when it is listed in the its particular category. The one which you can enter from Stories Index.

Ahhh, thanks, DP. I've never actually gone looking for stories from their particular categories, as odd as that may sound.

If you go to your author's page -- where you submit stories -- you can get a summary of the views and votes for your story, even if they haven't yet gotten the minimum 10 votes required to get on the top stories listing.

Whenever the number of votes goes down, whether on stories or poetry, it's because of Laurel's periodic purges of fraudulent or duplicate votes.

With server problems that cause duplicate posts on the BB, there are often duplicate votes as well. Almost every time Lit has server problems, this question about disappearing votes pops up; I don't think that's coincidence.

I'm not talking about purged votes:

I understand that Harold, but I'm not talking about votes purged by Laurel here. Does the system leech out votes over time? Month by month is there a reset value that loses a vote because it wasn't made recently enough? Because this is what is happening to my poetry submissions. They are losing already posted votes at the rate of one or two per month.

I don't know of any expiration date for votes, but there might be one.

Actually, I'm surprised there apparently isn't some sort of database purge set up to control what has to be an ever increasing load on the servers and scripts.

Now that Lit has reached the grand old age of five, some database purging may have become necessary, but I would expect it to only affect stories and poems that are 4-5 years old (depending on where the "old data" cutoff is set.)

Weird Harold,

In addition to the time since posting factor you mentioned, I wonder if they'd include other items such as ratings, views, or length of time since last view?

I'm not sure that the selection criteria is avaliable for anything other than posting date and rating.

I do know that Laurel and Manu appear to be averse to purging anything unless they absolutely have to. I have no idea what criteria they might apply if a regular purge to control the database size had to happen.

There was a time before Literotica began -- 1997/1998 during which I encountered a site called EroticStories.com (referred to by the inhabitants as ESC) run by a fellow name of Art.

While he was running that show, a story had a three-month unrestricted run. After that, any story would be deleted if the vote had not reached a certain level (10 votes I believe) the story had not maintained a certain score (70% - It was scored in whole numbers between 1 and 10) or, it had not generated a certain number of new views. (Never quite certain, but I believe less than 100 a month, after the initial three months.)

Any failure in any of the criteria and the story was purged.

I do not, however, recall hearing of a case of votes/visits/scores being purged. Neither can I see the point!

PS: I believe EroticStories.com still exists, but as a pay site.

Maybe I'm just a sick bastard, but I thought the thread title, "Do the votes BLEED off after a PERIOD of time" was a pun at first.

Sorry about that.
