Do the sweeps ever stop?

Poetry is about as subjective as writing can get. I am the volume editor of an annual regional anthology. There are three judges each for each of the sections of the anthology--fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Invariably the three poetry judges, all recognized poets, are all over the board opposed to each other on the voting for the poetry. Usually what wins for publication is the indifferent middle ground that neither moved nor upset the average of the three of them.

Ah, so poetry is like politics, then? :D

No, not really, but similar, I guess :D.

In politics, the doctrinaire start out with the conclusion. They know what they think before they look at any issue.

In poetry, unless the format is a giveaway, the reader knows what they like already (but they do with prose too), but they don't know what the poem is until they read it--or at least start reading it.

In politics, to the heavily partisan, you don't even have to read it to know what you think.
