I was reading this book about caring for cats and influencing their behavior, and one of the reasons given for spaying female cats, besides not wearing her out with litter-bearing, and populating the neighborhood with excess cats, was that mating gave them nothing but pain.

It's true that the penis of an intact tomcat is covered with barbs (the barbs disappear after altering) but it seems to me that every species that reproduces sexually has to get some kind of kick out of it, or reproduction would not happen.

Bear in mind that in the Victorian era, a well-known physician (a gynecologist, no less!) said that the idea that a "nice" woman had any kind of sexual feelings was, in his words, "a vile aspersion." We all know that Dr. Acton's theory was blown sky-high.

Actually, no, pleasure is not a necessary part of reproduction. It can be purely instinctual.

Also, the occurence of "rape" in animals is not uncommon.

I remember watching some nature show about a species of "monkeys" (I used that term vaguely here) and when they got to talking about mating, they explained how this particular animal mated not only instinctually but also for pleasure (to reduce stress), and they made a point of saying this was unusual. Though now that I think of it, the pleasure part of the equation, the way they showed it, was that the male basicly seemed to force the mating upon one or more females.
I saw a similar show about chimps... They actually masturbate.

I've read conflicting information about this. They certainly sound like they're in pain when they're mating. But, then, they also sound like they're in pain when they're in heat.

I have an acquaintance who has never gotten her cat spayed because she thinks the surgery would be too difficult for it and she also doesn't think that she has the right to make reproductive decisions for her pet. (But then she keeps the cat inside all the time, so it can't mate, so isn't that, in a sense, a reproductive decision that she's made?)

More power to her. Female cats are annoying as hell when they're in heat.

Apparently, she hasn't listened to Bob Barker enough. :D

I read something, somewhere, several years ago that pretty much said no, cat-sex is pretty much just pain. There's something about the tearing caused by the male that triggers ovulation in a female cat.

It really is pretty rare, I guess, for animals to have sex purely for fun. Dolphins, some monkeys, and oddly enough, I hear some species of geese actually fall into this category. Weird! :)

It is said in the marineland/seaworld type biz that when a hurricane is going to strike the area, the dolphins are put together in a deep, sheltered pool, and they stay huddled together during the course of the storm.

And then there's a bumper crop of baby dolphins the following year.
