Do dreams mean anything at all or is it bollocks?

Probably not a good idea to post this, but here goes.

For as long as I can remember, I've dreamt of whales. Mostly killer whales. Unfriendly ones. Big, black, swooping, and all powerful.

Swimming with them. Watching them. A million different beaches and oceans. Sometimes they're friendly and in the deep. Sometimes they're in the shallows and they're hunting. Other times they're in the shallows and they're hunting, but not for people. Not for me. The weather is nearly always clear in my dreams. Sunset.

Before I fell asleep earlier this arvo, I was thinking about how I mostly grew up in small towns. Australia and in NZ. Not much else to do but read. Study. Homework. Chores. Pray. Confess. Other things that I suppose happen in places where there isn't all that much to do, if you know what I mean.

It wasn't until I ventured across the ditch for school and work that I got the opportunity to explore my love of the ocean and I've dreamt of whales ever since.

But some of the dreams I have. I'm scared. Terrified. The sun is going down. I can see the whales from the shore. In my dreams they're huge. Huge and scary and fast. Like they're coming after me.

What the fuck does it mean? Does it mean anything?

In reality I have spent a lot of time out on the water. Not just on boards, but on boats. I've had my boatmasters since I was 17-18. I'm not scared of the water at all. In NZ I went fishing up at this place called Omapere. The Hokianga Harbour. There's these sand dunes. A friend of mine put her camera in the water. When we got back to the hotel and had a look at the footage, there was a killer whale in the video. It swam by me at the drop while I was standing in the water. I didn't see a thing.

Do you think my dreams mean anything? Do you dream of anything in particular like I do?

You are a realist.

Orcas are top predators. If they are hungry, you are fair game.

Do they mean something?

Not sure what you mean by "do dreams mean something?"

I don't think there is any reason to believe that dreams foretell events or have meanings in that sense. They are part of brain processing as we sort and file information in our sleep. They are an indication of things we think about during the day but in such abstract stories the link to reality may be illusive.

A dreaming blimmin realist. Great. :D

It's not all that uncommon for orca to swim alongside people down here, but honestly. For some stupid reason they terrify me far more than anything else in the water. I think it's an irrational fear more than anything. I've never heard of a person being attacked in the wild by an orca. And still, the dreams.

According to wiki, there's only one recorded orca bite on a human. Likely, too small a morsel to bother with. They have eaten moose.

They love to eat seal, ray and great white shark livers, apparently.

Our livers must be shite.

Dreams just give a window on what your sub-conscious is working on. That can be deeply meaningful when you are processing a lot of emotional angst, or inconsequential when you aren't. Your subconscious is always working on something it just might or might not be important.

Trying to interpret them whether it's someone else doing it or you is like palm reading or tarot card reading. You see what you need to see.

Except, I'm not talking about one dream about whales. I'm talking at least 50. For years. The dreams of whales and water.

I have a hard time believing it's nothing over and over and over again after having had so many.

On rare occasions I will have recurring dreams that never get to the end. These dreams can have a peaceful nature or can be frightening. They always come true. When I recognize that I have been at a certain place or have experienced certain circumstances then I know my dream is unfolding in real life. I finally get to find out how the dream ends in real life. The first time the ending was pleasant while the second was frightening enough I was shaking.

Left wing dingbats sure do a lot of dreaming. Too bad they’re unproductive dreams.

Sometimes I force myself awake.

My partner told me that if you look out the window after a dream, you will forget what you dreamt. I tried it and she was right.

You're right. We should all aspire to be argumentative cross dressers and spend all of our time getting our panties in a wad online. That would be way more productive.

I look at it as one of the great mysteries of life.

It's a fucking mystery alright.

Well...

Ordinarily. .

I would say you were craving a very large phallus. I'm thinking that's kind of on the unlikely end of the scale.

On a serious note though, depends how do you see whales? Sleek? Powerful? Gentle? Free?

I think from the above it sounds like you associate them with power. I think it's about you feeling powerful.

I can't quite come to terms with the possibility that Bollocks figure in your dreams at all. :)

That's an amazing story about being in the water in the Hokianga. (Did you like it there - it's an amazing but slightly weird part of the country.) I'm quite jealous - I'm like a marine mammal exclusion zone - whatever waters around the country that people regularly sight dolphines, whales, orca, whatever in, they're NEVER there when I am.
You saw this a while back? I've swum at that beach so bloody often - never a mammal of any description except for dogs.

Dreams are annoying - I can never work out if they mean anything or not. Sometimes it's obviously your subconscious in overdrive, but those are, irritatingly, the ones that seem to have the most meaning (like me dreaming that my dad was sitting on my bed a few days after he died). Maybe you just like whales?

I've been all over the far north. I found it peaceful. Beautiful. Quiet. Like I could breathe. There's definitely a spiritual feeling there. I worked hard and was lucky enough to travel up to North Cape with DoC rangers. Tom Bowling. The whale station at Cape Brett. Many, many islands in The Bay.

Maybe I do just like whales. Maybe sometimes I wish I could be one.

Maybe they are plagued by hemorrhoids, Prep H is made from sharks liver oil.

I'd take a team of orcas over a house spider any day, and I can't fucking swim.

You're remembering your past life as a whale.
