DO AS DICK GEPHARDT SAYS...NOT AS HE DOES

Dick Gephardt, the class-warfare specialist, was set to appear at a photo-op to attack George W. Bush's energy policy, get a few shots in at the energy industry, and nag Americans about their own energy consumption. And he set a fine example by showing up at the photo-op in a massive Chevrolet Suburban--which gets about 14 miles to the gallon on city roads.

One reporter asked Gephardt's spokesman, Eric Smith, why he had to ride around in such a gas-guzzler, Smith said, "We don't say anything about changing people's lifestyles."

Sure you don't. Isn't it the leftist environmentalists who get their panties in a wad when they see people driving sport-utility vehicles and building luxury homes and throwing out plastic bottles? Aren't they the ones who keep insisting that the only way to save this planet is for us to end our wasteful, selfish consumerism? To me, that seems like Dick Gephardt and his friends are all about changing people's lifestyles.

Everyone else's lifestyles, that is, except for his own. Remember, Gephardt is one of the elite Democrats. Just like Dianne Feinstein and her anti-gun crowd, who want to confiscate everyone else's privately owned guns...yet still carry their own and have armed bodyguards.

Democrats want to make the rules...but they don't necessarily want to follow those rules.

As another friendly voice: "General Board: Want to talk about something not covered anywhere else? Try this board!"
Let him speak about whatever he wants if he's so inclined. By the same token reply in whatever way you choose, but I hope (for the good of everyone who can elect which topics they want to read and reply to) that he continues posting as and when (and what) he wants. That goes for everyone!

:)

Thank you, Ally C. I guess I'm one of those dull politicos, but these are the kinds of threads I like. The "fun" threads are great to read, but I wouldn't know what to do in them. (I recommend TinaG13's Politics thread - PC and EBW were awesome. :D)

And now to comment on Todd's article: Congress (and the White House) uses Suburbans to get around D.C. I don't know if they're souped up models, but they're standard issue. Are you advocating the government drop the lot and buy a new fleet of cars? Seems more wasteful if you ask me. And what I'm sure Gephardt's spokesman was attempting to say is that environmentally friendly changes will not take hold of society if it requires massive changes on the part of the consumers. Instead, I believe the Dems (and most mainstream environmentalists) advocate changing the effects of consumer products before they reach the market place. Hence, increase the gas mileage of that Suburban, not replace it with a smaller car.

The market is going to take care of these issues, though. Gas goes up, people buy more efficient cars, then gas will go down again. People will move out of California and Arizona when they have to pay astronomical power and water bills.

The thing about SUVs is they get better gas mileage than the gas efficient cars of teh last energy crisis. We need to just go to natural gas for cars, its cheaper, cleaner, and we have a hell of a lot of it.

In light of present government wate scrapping a fleet of cars would be like you and I throughing out our pocket change at the end of the day.

Why don't Dick promote a care like the diesel Volkswagon Jetta. Seats 6-8 comfortable and gets about 55-75 MPG depending on how well you keep it up and how you drive it?

Diesel?! You gotta be joking. And 8 adults in a Jetta? We're talking Pygmies, right? With at least one strapped to the hood? :)

On a side note try researching the ballard feul cell that was perfected in the 70's. the perfect fuel source. Long lasting cheap, no environmental emmissions.

Why is it not in full use 30 years later? No profits for the democrats if its a buy it once and thats it product ;)

I can't remember if I've posted on that one yet (or even read it), but I'll trust your recommendation and have a look.

Wait a minute. You're blaiming the Dems for choosing profits over the environment? Since when did the GOP crawl out of the pocket of the oil and auto industries and make room for the Dems? Try again, Todd. You're not going to pin this one solely on one party. (And I'll look up that fuel cell later, so I can fully understand the situation.)

At the time it was actually the dems vs. repubs, but as you said now it would be the cell versus repubs and dems you may have to get into a microphish{sp] site to read the news papers of the times.

I don't think the diplomatic Suburban's used for Congress, the President, and other goverment leaders are "souped up" in the sense of having more power or being more luxuious, but I suspect they are armored.

Todd's suggestion of replacing them with Volkswagen Jedda's won't fly for a couple of reasons.

First and Foremost, the Jedda isn't an "American Car." (I don't think there is any such animal anymore, but if there is, Volkwagen is at the head of the list of those which aren't.)

Second, Any small fuel efficient car just doesn't have the mass and power to force it's way out of a dangerous situation -- Assasination attempt, kidnapping attempt, natural disater, etc.

Third, A small car, no matter how fuel efficient, just doesn't have the space for "the amenities" necessary to maintain the "prestige of the position." "Important People" don't ride in small cars, especially in America where "good" cars have always been always been bigger, faster, and more powerful than "bad" cars.

The facts of whether a small fuel efficient car is just as luxurious or comfortable is irrelevant to the Perception that bigger means better to Americans when it comes to cars.

 Huh? My politics? Hmmmmm, it must be very entertaining...:D

I dont know about the Suburbans used by Congress, but the used used for Cabinet, VP, and the President are extremmly souped up, with extra large engines, armor, flat resist tires the whole 9 yards.

Who do you think orginally invented the idea for Firestone of tires that dont go flat for over 50 miles?
