I have been asked by some athiest Friends to teach thier kids about the bible.
I taught it as a history book, with guidelines for living. I didn't not say this is a law that you have to obey but I taught it as simply a history book with guidelines for life.
I did not teach it in its religious side, I did answer uestions of its religious nature, if I was asked.
I have only taught out of the 'christian' religions, meaning the various denominations, catholic, baptist, presbyterian, etc. Also I have taught out of Mormon religion as well and Jehovahs Witness Religion.
That's too enormous a question for me to adequately answer on a BB (particualry a porn BB).
My kids are too young for such distinctions. It's enough now that they hear the Bible stories, are comforted away from the reality of death, and develop a feeling of justice and protection.
But, to somewhat answer your question -- no, I'll never teach it as law, and I will never allow a church leader to speak to them about Evil or the Devil as in any way an incarnate being, or as Hell as an actual place where one receives the ultimate time-out.
I will continue to answer questions and introduce other points of view when conversations prompt them. When they're in their teens I will introduce Newton, Einstein and Todd.
As to why I'm an atheist...
I answered Todd about that briefly once. Maybe he can find the thread. Perhaps I can just say this -- to my mind it's an odd question, akin to "Why don't you believe that Giraffes eat asteroids?" A conviction that the universe is a (glorious) clockwork mechanism without need for preternatural supervision is NOT, as some would say, a denial of God. I don't deny God, just as I don't deny that jellyfish wear hats. The question simply doesn't come up, because I find it that silly.
And how I arrived at that sublime confidence is too too long and dull to laundry list here. Let's just say it has to do with an unquenchable desire to research and understand the unprejudiced actuality of things.
