Hey, anyone catch that Discovery Channel special on the Neanderthals? Excellent.

Damn man...I think we watch the exact same Tv shows...I just watched the 'Makeing of Neanderthal' last night as well.

You know what I hated though? In the middle of the show they ran a promo for "The Making of Neanderthal", and showed a clip of one of the actors playing a Neaderthal, in make-up, who up until this point had been speaking in a pre-historical grunt with vacant eyes, speaking conversationally in tiny little British accent -- totally ruined the illusion for me for the rest of the night.

Very true...I've always wondered how they 'make up' languages...like the Cromagnon(spelling?) man was speaking some sort of primitive language when they showed him. Are the actors just speaking bullcrap or do they have 'planned' lines?

It reminded me of "Quest for Fire", and how startling it was to see different species of humans interacting. Makes you wonder what the world would be like today if Neanderthal had survived. Would they be second class citizens? Would we have different definitions for terms like "civil rights"?

I don't know but you have to wonder weither they truly 'died out' or if they interbred enough to become part of the modern genepool. They have found evidence of 'half and half' babies with both Cromagnon and Neanderthal 'qualities'. But that is an interesting theory. If there were two different species...there would be more than just racism...it wouldn't be the color of your skin or your sex anymore, it would be your species.

It would make for an interesting "alternate history" book.

I don't think any Neanderthal and Homo Sapien hybrids survived long, even if it were possible genetically. We'd see evidence of them today.

Of course, the National Georgraphic has yet to explore the Literotica chat rooms...
