At the end of Interesting Times, the old Emperor has died, apparently childless, and Cohen has made himself Emperor. Well, that's a mere coup -- Ave bossa nova, similis bossa seneca!
But, at the same time, the Committee for Public Safety's revolution, of far wider significance, has succeeded, at least to the extent that Cohen appears to have nothing against it -- and he is a barbarian with enough common sense to curtail any particularly ill-advised or impractical plans the revolutionaries may have in mind. A promising situation.
But then, at the end of The Last Hero, Cohen dies. He is survived by many natural offspring, but it is doubtful the Agateans would recognize any of them as Cohen's heir.
So what happens next to the Empire?
