Strange question; can people who comment come back and delete their comments later?

I had a comment on my story vanish and I haven't deleted any. I also read all the comments, so I know that it wasn't anything that would cause the admins to delete it (ie, no personal threats or anything of that nature).

It's not a big deal, I just found it odd.

No, I don't think someone can delete their own comment on a story. The Web site occasionally deletes comments on people's stories. I don't think anything's ever been posted on when they will choose to do this or how they are led to comments they want to delete.

I've had this happen too. With one story some of the comments were so outrageously trollish that it didn't surprise me that the admin deleted them, but with another I couldn't figure out why the comment was gone.

Much of the operation of this Site is a mystery to me. That may be a good thing; the admin/owner may believe that as long as the rules are to some degree unknown they can't be worked around.

Ok, thanks.

For the life of me I can't remember any comments that were even overtly hostile, let alone meriting deletion.

I'm pretty sure members can delete there own comments, but anonymous folks can't.

My understanding, although I haven't done this, is that as a member you can delete other people's comments to your story, whether they are anonymous or not, but once you've posted a comment to someone else's story you cannot delete it.

Yes, an author can delete any comment in their own story file, but once a comment is posted, that's it, the original commenter cannot edit or remove it. Laurel can remove any comment, any time, and does so against trolls or where accounts are shut down - offensive comments or spam being removed across the whole library.

I have also seen cases where a story's metadata indicates there are comments, but none are shown. I assume this is where an author at first allowed comments, but subsequently turned them off.
