Yep. The guy behind such controversial films as Kids and Bully is back with Ken Park which is apparantly even more hardcore than both previous films combined.

I liked Kids and Bully (I also enjoyed Another day in Paradise; James Woods is always excellent) even though they were pretty hard to stomach. Ken Park promises to push the envelope even farther with an examination of the Columbine shooter type teenager. Is the MPAA ready? :D

What do you all think? Larry Clark: Filmmaking genius or low-life pornographer?

lavender,
Yes, he could be rolling his eyes.. or, he could be looking up and then getting confused.

Anyhow, I doubt very you could create a truthful depiction of a ‘Columbine shooter type’ kid.

Why not? I think we are all familiar with the types of things that can turn teenages into sociopaths.

I guess the question is, do we want to see a film that tackles it squarely instead of taking the dark comedy route like Heathers.

Why the need for this response to someone who was sincerely asking our opinion on a matter? This is a very valid question. Kids was a very poignant movie that made me sit and think for quite some time.

I get it - the next time someone brings up a valid question that makes us state an opinion rather than just how we want our ass fucked I'll just roll my eyes.

What a cool fucking game.

I pulled this thread off the end of the page and put it back at the top so you could see it and post a reply even if it was to my silly little emotions and not to the thread or poster of the thread. So :p

Wow! All this animosity! And all I wanted was to know what people thought of Larry Clark!

I have not seen any of the films, but I thought the thread needed some one to post to it and I didn't want to just say bump.

The Colimbine kids weren’t sociopaths, though I am interested in what ‘we are all familiar with’ – why do you think teenagers do that? I have a personal interest in that question; the day Colimbine occurred the principal pulled me from my classes and sent me home due to a suggestion from the school psychiatrist.

I guess we could argue about what breeds a sociopath and whether they fit that description but I'm not an expert on the facts surrounding the shooting (I'm just a guy who wanted to talk about movies :( ).

I do think that these days there are many young people growing up that have very strong feelings of emptiness and apathy. And anyone who has attended school has witnessed or been a part of bullying, teasing, and many other forms of physical and psychological abuse. Not all people are able to cope with these things as well as others. And the fact that many adults turn a blind eye doesn't help.

I guess very few people here have seen these movies. I didn't think they were that obscure. Oh well . . .

I think it can be done and done well. Is he the man to do it? I don't know.

The basketball diaries was pretty interesting and along the same lines.

The fact of the matter is, no one really knows yet what Ken Park is actually about. Advance reports are sketchy and critics who've seen it are tight lipped. I just know it deals with teenagers, sex, drugs and murder. The difference is the kids in this picture are actually mentally unstable, not simply burned out dopers like in the other movies. The Columbine reference came from one critic who couldn't think of a better way to describe what he'd seen. Whether it's really about that remains to be seen.

No one is going to mention the other memeber of the duo responsible for kids?

Harmony Korine

He wrote kids, which I didnt find all that stellar, but also has directed some experimental films, a dogma 95 film, and done some pretty fucking interesting conceptual/performance art projects.

Its my understanding that Ken Park is the first film that joins forces since kids.

This year has soon not a single film that has cried out for my money. I'd rather blow it on something daring than another sequel to whatever summer blockbusters tromped through the cineplex last year.

Back to the thread...

The film may be an overly dramatic piece of shit indulging the artistic wankiering of the two but it could be pretty fuckin' cool too.

... and I didnt know about the film until I did some reading after being prompted by this thread, so thank you for starting it.

medj you know what, I always want to rent one of his films, but then I get to the video place, and I've had kind of a rough day, and I just don't want to see something that's going to send me to bed that down... I am sure someday i will get round to seeing one but it's become like this running joke between my husband and I... "Well we could rent 'Kids'...nah...let's just get a porno and pull out the sleeper sofa." You can see what I mean, right?

<snip>

If Korine is in involved, I definitely want to see it. I haven't seen Bully yet, but I think I like Clark so far. Thanks for the heads up, Medjay.
