Well, with BLoved consigned to the rubbish pile of history, the air seems clearer and the sun seems to be shining brighter. All is well again in the little town of Literopia, so what better way to celebrate than by playing a game all about obfuscation, lies and backstabbing? Exactly.

For the uninitated, Diplomacy is a board game seen as similar to Risk in that the aim is world domination, but with the emphasis far more on diplomacy and manipulating one's opponents to get what you want. This is the definitive version of the rules, the 4th edition from 2000, which is comprehensive but quite heavy going for beginners. This is a much simpler beginner's guide. Here is the Wikibooks entry for Diplomacy, which contains a bunch of stuff that is probably worth reading. Countries are going to be assigned randomly for fairness' sake.

Let me emphasise that playing fair is unlikely to get you far here - you should treat your opponents as being conniving, sneaky bastards and in order to beat them, you'll have to become a conniving, sneaky bastard yourself. If you've got any questions, and since we'll probably have some newbies that's likely, I'll be here to help as well.

So aside from Syd, who just stopped short of getting on her knees to beg for a game, who else wants to throw their hat into the ring?
ETA: We'll be playing via email, although I'll keep this thread updated as the seasons go by.

I'm a noob, but I'll have a crack.

I used to love playing Risk - 2 to 3 day marathons were not unusual in my dorm at university, with players switching in and out as classes and/or exhaustion demanded - but reading the *short* version of the rules really confuzzled me just now.

I guess I'll say, count me in, and I'll try to not be the first nation-state to crumble under its own inertia.

I am playing, DUH, and Seb said he would play, too :) Are we playing on this website? Like, would Seb have to create an account? Or are we going to take it off this site and play on another site or play via email? That would be better for me, and make it more likely that Seb will actually play, but either way should be fine.

YAY SO EXCITED

Good point. I hadn't thought about that, but since email is the normal way to do it let's go with that. I'm going to need some addresses.

Alright, let me just see which email address Seb wants me to give you, and then I will PM them your way.

i'm a RISK fanatic, but i've never played Diplomacy. this sounds like a lot of fun. i want to play!

Email addy sent to MS.

How fast is this going to play? Like one move per day, or ... ?

and are we going to have email addies for each player to make alliances, negotiate, etc., or have to pass them through MS, or what?

I'm so confused. I'm probably going to end up attacking and defeating myself. :: blink blink ::

neci please me said:

It's a lot like RISK, only no one person has enough power to do anything on their own. You have to make alliances, etc. in order to achieve anything. That includes sacrificing people left and right. The GM decides how long the turns last. It's pretty much all politics.

It will be significantly more than one day per move. We're talking at least a week for movement phases, a couple of days for building and retreating phases (although those are upper limits. If I get everybody's moves in before that, I'll activate the turn then).

You'll also have one another's addresses. Nothing needs to come to me except for orders.

i've been reading through all the rules, and whew! i'm pretty confused over here as well.

I want to say it gets easier as you play it, but I'm not sure how true that is for everybody.

But fuck it, we'll try.

Diplomacy was really interesting. The last time I played was probably ten plus years ago, and I'm sure it has changed much since then. I remember it as being a pretty simple game rules-wise. But, like chess, simple rules did not mean simple gameplay.

Anyway, good luck y'all. I don't have time enough to get into another online game.

It sounds so incredibly fun BUT I know that my brain can't handle it. At least right now.

Soooo... it appears we have Lizzie, me, Syd, Seb and Neci... that's five, right? Or does MS count as GM? And we're supposed to have exactly seven players?

Yes, we need 7 players, not counting MS. 7 Players to represent the 7 European powers.

Start recruiting!

Correct. In a pinch, it's possible to play with any number of players, and six is quite easy to do, but if somebody can grab a seventh that'd be great. Liz, ImOnIt, need emails from both of you.

I'll start asking around.

this is going to be interesting. :D

just one more player needed...

I still have an unplayed copy of Machiavelli, which is a variant on Diplomacy. It's hard to find people willing to sit down and play a board game for a day now. The german style of games, which are all playable within an hour or so have rather put the death knell to the day-long board games.

I miss the days of playing Civilization. sigh

Play Diplomacy with us! We only need one more player.
