DILETTANTE vs AMATEUR FOR IDGITS

Amateurs aren't paid, dilettantes are dabblers with or without training, experience, or knowledge of their particular interest.

Good definition. Trying to think of some in fiction.

Allingham's "Campion" and Sayers' Peter Wimsey would count as Amateurs, I think. They both had independent means, or did they? They don't dabble, and they weren't paid, like Holmes or Wolfe, or Marlowe were. Father Brown could fit as a dilettante.
