Unless your dildo is 100% silicone (which means you will have paid $60+ for it), glass or steel AND you're going to sterilize it via boiling or the dishwasher after anal use, you'll need to use a condom with it for anal. Most toys are porous materials, which means bacteria gets into all of the little nooks and crannies and will not come out, no matter how well you wash it or what special cleaner you use. You don't want fecal bacteria in your pussy or on your clit, where it can easily get into your urethra and cause a bad infection. Any time something goes in your ass, it either needs to be covered with a condom or sterilized (if it's capable of being sterilized) prior to going in your pussy or anywhere else. Besides, a lot of toys contain chemicals that can irritate delicate tissues and pose a health risk, and condoms make for very quick, easy cleanup, so they're a good idea regardless.

There are lots of great tips for anal play in The Blank Manual sticky. Even those that refer to anal sex have great advice. The main things are probably to use lots of good lube (NOT a numbing lube or KY Jelly, which dries up quickly because it's formulated for one-time insertion for medical procedures), go slow and stop if it hurts (you DON'T want injuries in that area!). If you have trouble, you might want to start with fingers, or something else smaller than your toy, so your body can adjust to the size.
