I need a computer nerd......

I am getting a digital camera soon and would like for you folks to play "consumer reports" for me. I have never owned a digital, just my film cameras.

I want one that will take
1. great landscape and action shots for the purpose of enlarging and printing.
2. needs to have good optical zoom
3. good close-ups
4. takes video clips

We looked at the new Sony that uses a cd for storage. The problem with this model is that it's new, I don't know if all of the bugs are worked out, and and I don't think it has enough mp for enlarging and printing.

Also, my computer is a Sony Vaio, I would like to get something compatible with the software I already have for editing photos and video clips. Preferrably one that uses usb port rather than serial.

Anyone have one (referring to a camera guys) that they think is outstanding?

Digi's

I own a Sony Cyber-shot (3.3 mega pixels)
Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar lens
10 x precision digital zoom
Mpeg movie HQ
USB to PC
External flash terminal
Memory stick storage 128mb

etc etc etc

my only criticism is lack of a viewfinder the LCD can be a problem especailly in bright light. Being used to SLR's and medium format cameras it took me some time to get used to it.

Sample shot using macro facility

I can't get real technical

But I own a Mavica, it was next to top of the line when I bought it and I have loved it very much, especially the floppy disk feature which lets me share disks and just pop them into my computer.

Sony's a good name and I would go straight to the CD version if I were in the market for a new camera.

But, again, I'm no expert...

Well, I'm my dad's ex-spurt....

My former neighbor had one of the SONY Mavica-CD cameras. It's very reliable as far as storing and transfering images.

It uses the USB port to turn the camera into a CD-RW drive using the proven Adaptec DirectCD software. The pictures are stored on the CD as standard JPG files, so any software that can manage JPG files can use the images from that camera.

Depending on how large you want to make the enlargements, it should have enough resolution for you. Unless you've got enough money to buy the very top of the line super-megapixel cameras, no digital camera has sufficent resolution to enlarge much beyond 8x10.

I understand, from other discussions here, that you need a printing resolution of 300 dpi for "near-photo quality" prints. The more dots-per-inch you can print at (up to the limits of your printer) the better the printed photos look. If you have a photo saved at 800x600, then the ideal size to print is (800/300=2.7)x(600/300=2.0) or wallet size.

If you're looking to enlarge photos, a scanner that has transparency capability will allow better enlargements than anything any digital camera can produce. You can scan a 4x6 inch print at 9600 dpi and print it at 300 dpi and get a 128"x192" enlargement of "near-photo quality." Thare is no camera available that will give you 38,400 x 57,600 resolution.

Thank you all for your help! I will now go shopping armed with a bit more unbiased information.

Looking forward to seeing the results..
