Difficult to find editor.

I would have many story ideas but every time I try to publish something there is the same problem. English is not my native language and I would need some help with the text so that it would be totally error free.

Now I have a story written in november that isn't published yet because I have not find any editor to it. I have tried to edit it by myself many times and I now it can not have many errors left. Something there is because it keeps pouncing back.

I have written to several editors. Few of them have answered and promised to help me. But I don't have heard about them ever since.

I am thinking to give up. Maybe fault is in my stories. They are not mainstream and maybe not so good anyway. That is why it would also be nice to work with good editor.

I don't think that every editor should always help me immediatly but don't promise something that you can't keep.

But, I've discovered a few tools that come in handy and helps you self-edit. Well, at least to the point where you can publish them on Literotica.

So, I would suggest that you:

1. Use Grammarly. It's a free tool that checks your text and provide suggestions on how to improve it
2. If you have Word, use the Review option of grammar check
3. Search for an editor by reading the "Available for edit in March" post here on this Messageboard
4. Publish anyway. Yes, you will get comments about your lack of editing, but you also might get "I like your story, but I hate the grammar mistakes. Can I edit for you?"
5. Try to self-edit as much as possible before sending the story to an editor. Your editor can never fix all your sentences so you have to do the most of it in advance


I have published stories that are so full of errors that it's embarrassing to read them today. But, at the time they were written, that was the level I was on.
I still got a lot of readers saying that they liked the stories, so it doesn't have to be perfect (even if I wish they were )

My Word is functioning in Finnish language so it corrects only Finnish. English text looks like every is wrong because the correction understands only Finnish words.

I have tried to edit it by myself several times like I wrote. I think I have most of the errors found and corrected but something there still is because it pounces back if I publish it.

When I request editing for a specific piece with people who haven't already volunteered to help, I try to include a meaningful capsule to potential responders; if that's not provided, they often just skip past. One example:

... I have 26K+ words in 7 chapters ...

MS Word is a terrible resource for editing, in my experience. Grammarly is better even as it gives me 95+% false positives, but if it catches even one error in a piece I've already looked over often enough to make my eyes bleed, it can be worth it.

It would also be helpful to include the verbatim reason given for the rejection of your story.

I don't know if this might help. I just did a search for Finnish to English online translator. My search came up with a number of sites that look like you can paste in blocks of text, etc. Not sure if they will resolve sentence construction issues between the two languages — It might be worth a try?

Online translators are ok for getting a good ide of what is being written in another language, but never take the result as correct. Most when translating to English put the verbs in the wrong place and although just about readable it is not correct.

I have found that translators are quite bad. Finnish can very few in the world speak and I have seen lots of text that someone has used translator from English to Finnish. The text is terrible. You can quite understand it but sometimes the words have different meanings in different languages and so on. Maybe then they works if you keep the text very simple.

And Grammarly isn't always right, but it still catches a lot of errors that I tend to miss (like missing words, etc), so I guess it's more useful for us with English as Second language .

Ada_Stuart should get credit for suggesting Grammarly, all I did was second. It's a help, especially compared to MS Word or (god forbid) autocorrect, but by no means enough.

It is published now so the Grammarly did the job well.
