Different sex

Who has seen this before:

Guy licks girl to orgasm.
Girl sucks guy to or close to orgasm.
Girl and guy have sex, orgasm together.

Standard formula, right? We've all ready this scene before, and we've done so for a reason. It works. It builds up the tension, leaves both partners well pleasured, and builds to a natural 'climax', so to speak.

Here's the question, what other formulas might there be? Different ways to lay out the same old sex scene. I'm not talking about specifics to tweak a variation out of a theme. I'm talking about redoing the underlying structure of the whole animal. Like...

Girl and Guy have sex.
Guy Orgasms.
Girl starts masturbating.
Guy becomes aroused, they have sex again.

Bare-bones foundations on which we can base sex scenes so that they don't come out the same way over and over again.

Let's see if this works.

I'm not so sure that thinking in these terms is too good for a sex scene. For me, I like to think about the overall effect of the scene wrt the entire storyline. The genre/category I'm working in also has a lot to do with it.

For example, one of the stories I'm working on is a leg-sex/incest fetish piece with BDSM undertones. I'll quickly outline it below:

The male POV character has been going out for a year with his girlfriend, a lovely but rather straight laced woman. He's waiting for her after work at 'Nocturnal Admissions,' a fetish clothing store that specializes in latex, PVC and shoes. She thinks they're going to a show. He wants to dump her.

She's in the back doing her float when a customer, an older matronly type, comes into the store at minutes after 5. She calls from the back asking POV character to tell the customer they are closed. Then, knowing that percent commission on almost anything in the store is a nice chunk of change, asks POV to assist the customer instead.

POV character is annoyed, but likes the look of the worldly, mature woman. She's almost as tall as he is, and has nice long legs.

They have sex out in front, sex which is interrupted by GF.

POV, busted, thinks he's dead, but he intended to break up with GF anyway. He braces himself for the fallout. Instead, GF is in fetish clothes. Woman is really her aunt. This was a test.

He passed it. They want to introduce him to a world of serious kink, but didn't know how straight he was. Their concerns are unfounded. He's a dog, just like them.

They have hot 3-way sex in many variations, etc.

Little speech on trust in a relationship, then fade to black.

The sex in the story must serve the immediate purposes of the story. I also like the successive sex scenes to get hotter as I go along. This way, the reader is rewarded for ploughing through 10-15,000 words of text. A great sex scene also can be about lousy sex, if the story calls for it.

Using your method, I could break up the sex scenes as follows:

Sex Scene One:
1- POV / Older Woman (OW) flirt
2- POV / OW engage in light fetish play w/feet and legs
3- POV / OW engage in heavy petting and kissing
4- POV / OW busted by arrival of Girlfriend (GF)

Sex Scene Two:
1- POV / OW have rougher BDSM play, w/ GF as observer
2- POV has forced Oral sex on OW, GF chats with OW at same time
3- Serious leg sex between POV and OW
4- Vaginal and leg sex between POV / OW
5- GF takes charge. 3 way (GF / POV / OW)

Sex Scene Three:
1- Nice oral sex scene w/ GF / POV
2- Hot anal sex scene w/ POV / GF

Even though I can break it up like that, does it really help me? No. Did I need this framework to think up my sex scenes? No. In fact, I derived the breakup above from my small outline cited earlier, not the other way around.

One point I will concede is that outlined like you suggest, one can rapidly see where any potential sex scene repetition might manifest. Scenes in a single story must be unique or the reader will get bored with them. I have other ways of tracking that, though.

This is a great thread, Impetus. Always love hearing different ideas about how to tackle the various aspects of writing about sex, and the problems that might be encountered.
