and he got caught up in the bailer.

Well I guess - any swift thinking farmer who knows - keeps a saw on hand for just such an emergencey.....

Before the machine could take his life.....

He took his own arm off at the elbow.....

Ouch!!!!

Nope - the arm could not be saved - too badley mangled.

Could you do that?

I could. I would. No doubt.

Oh, the farmer in the dell

He had to have been baling hay, Spark, you can't bale shit.:p

Maybe not "M-e-n-s-a" (let's all spell it together)

But I can wade through any ammount you can pucker up and pinch out of your tight little sphincter.

The shaolin tradition of bowing with one hand lies in the fable of the Bohdidahrma and the disciple to cut off his right hand to prove "He got it."

Hey Sparky!

Was it a power saw or a hand saw? A power saw, zip the arm is off! Now with a hand saw, that would require some real guts, to saw your arm off before the machine swallowed you. Yuck!

Last winter one of my mother's neighbors from down the road, lost a son in a farming accident...He was sucked into the manure spreader and chewed up. He died instantly they say, but it took them about 4 hours to get the body out. Not a pretty picture I'm sure.

I can't really see the logic in having a saw handy "just in case", but not being alert enough to keep your appendages out of the works.

Seems kind of like always sitting in a coffin to clean your guns, in case you have an "accidental discharge".

I think the guy was just fortunate that he happened to have a saw handy. What happened was he got it sucked into the part of the baler that draws the hay in, and was stuck there.

I'm sure he was there for a while thinking about it, and growing fainter by the minute from blood loss, until he decided no help was coming and he was gonna bleed to death before anyone else showed.

Would have been easier and cleaner if it was a PTO shaft. 540 rpm and ~rip~ the arm comes off clean as a whistle, unless you've got exceptionally strong shoulders.

Then your whole body sort of wraps around it like a rag doll on a hand drill.
