Alysia Finley has a column out today that discusses how chronic marijuana use is a common characteristic among mass shooters and other violent crimes. We’re used to calls for more gun control and more attention to mental health whenever there’s a shooting. It’s time to more closely examine the role cannabis policies might play as well.

Some excerpts:

Joshua Jahn was far from alone in using marijuana heavily before committing serious acts of violence.

Increasing studies show that frequent use of marijuana, especially at high potency, is associated with violent behavior, schizophrenia, psychosis and suicidal thoughts—not to mention heart attacks and strokes. These associations hold when researchers control for demographics, mental and other illnesses, and use of other drugs.

Correlation doesn’t prove causation. But the primary factors that scientists look at to demonstrate a causal effect—consistency and strength of association, dose response, plausible biologic mechanism, coherence between lab and observational finding, and experimental evidence—all suggest cannabis use can trigger psychosis and violent inclinations.

As a teenager, Jahn often posted on a Reddit forum for cannabis users. In April 2016, he pleaded guilty to a felony count of trafficking marijuana. The following year, he moved to Washington state—one of the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use—to work on a pot farm.

“He was all about the weed. He wanted to be part of the scene. He lived in his car while he helped,” the farm’s manager, Ryan Sanderson, told the New York Post. “There are people who work, and there are people who go through the motions. He was one of those guys. He didn’t work that hard, probably because he was too high.”

He later drifted and became socially isolated, logging more than 10,000 hours playing games like “Team Fortress 2” and “Left 4 Dead 2.” The latter game involves shooting masses of violent zombies. Might a deadly cocktail of marijuana use and violent videogames have turned Jahn into a zombie?

The author acknowledges that "Correlation doesn’t prove causation" and pot isn't a drug most associate with violence, BUT she does make a case for more research.

One thing for sure, the shooters were mentally ill, and all had easy access to guns and violent online discussion forums.

More Excerpts:

Cannabis-induced psychosis is a well-documented psychiatric disorder, more common among people who use pot at a young age and suffer mental illness. THC, the psychoactive ingredient, gets sopped up by the brain’s fatty deposits and can alter its chemistry. That differentiates it from alcohol, which washes out of the body after a few hours.

Robin Westerman, the transgender man who shot up a Minneapolis Catholic church last month, blamed his pot habit. “Gender and weed f— up my head,” Westerman wrote in a note found by investigators. “I wish I could stop vaping but I can’t! If I could stop vaping, I could stop myself from doing this attack, but I just don’t want to.”

Mass shooters Nikolas Cruz, Jared Lee Loughner and Devin Patrick Kelley were found to be heavy pot users. There are plenty of other examples of apparent cannabis-induced violence that have drawn less media attention:

A 42-year-old Minnesota man blamed a bad reaction to a THC seltzer drink for his alleged attempt to strangle and drown his 64-year-old mother and 25-year-old sister in a lake this summer.

Or consider a young woman in California who hallucinated after taking a hit from a bong and perceived she was under attack. She then stabbed to death her partner with kitchen knives before piercing herself and her dog with the cutlery. Medical experts for the prosecution and defense agreed she was experiencing cannabis-induced psychosis.

Trump just posted that pot is good for senile old dipshits like Rebel5 and babyboozer.

Does being elderly make you racist?

[Elizabeth Holms riots] Geez, the case hasn’t even gone to the jury and the rioters in CA are already looting the high end fashion stores. If the verdict goes the wrong way the streets of Walnut Creek, San Francisco, and LA could be filled with blondes in black turtlenecks. Not even going to guess how this would all go down if she were black.

I notice you didn't deny your racism.

I stand by my posts.

Sometimes it just sucks to be you, doesn't it?
I'll sit here awaiting the articles and studies you find explaining how pot is ok for seniors but not for anyone else or, more to all our interests, how if you're allowed to use pot as a senior citizen then you are more liable to go on a mass shooting and possibly have your 2a curtailed.

I ENJOY WATCHING ALL YOUR FACE PLANT SELF OWNS.

Lemee axe you sumpin'...

WT actual F does this have to do with the possibility that cannabis causes psychosis?
HAHAHA!

So glad you asked, you fuckin dipshit.
Do you... does your stupid ass care to explain the discrepancy Dear Leader has put the OP in?

It’s really amazing how some on the left on this board are incapable of understanding the difference between chronic cannabis addiction and therapeutic use.

Should I even ask yo...
- No, don't do it bn2f! (But conscience, I gotta!)
- Ok, but you asked for it.

Do tell then rebel what the OP was implying by starting this thread that I do not comprehend, but you and your big brain on Brad does so much better than me and all the other fukwads?

I’m sorry if you took this thread to be a shot at couch potato stoners like you. I didn’t mean to offend you. Have another toke and enjoy your Krispy Kremes.

That's your explanation?
Sooooo, if, for example, you or I chose to run for office and oppo research showed that we were members of a porn website do you think any amount of explaining by us would convince the general public that we were just there to talk politics? Or that maybe just taking in just a little bit of porn is actually therapeutic?

I myself could give a fuck what reason anyone anywhere is on any porn site, but I am also not starting threads hinting that mass shooters are pot heads.

I'm waiting on Chili Moron-o to show up and tell us how we're all wrong and pot makes you smarter than Lex Luthier.

I see no discrepancy because what you're doing is the same thing dooRmat did when he claimed that Trump said Tylenol CAUSES autism.

And we all know how that turned out.

So glad to see that we are all on the same page here and deflecting.
I made my point. Your thread and all that you're trying to imply is shit.
No need for me to stay any longer here and embarrass you any more than you can do to yourself.

I'll also mention that I told you lackwits about this many moons ago and you dismissed it.

No, just years of the hatemongering left pushing people over the edge.

The leftists in this forum are responsible for this with their endless hatred. I wonder how many of these losers are married and if their wives know how disgusting they are when they run from their meek little lives to come here and talk tough and incite murder.

We haven't seen this level of inbred retardedness since Bobo was vanquished.
