did anyone really like jerry lewis?

His comedy was overbearing and annoying.

His telethons interrupted my TV viewing on Labor Day as a child.

He did a lot of good with his charity work.

I guess the French loved him.

The Animaniacs "Director" character parody was a hoot. :D

This question should probably be asked on French Lit, assuming they can stop sobbing long enough to answer.

Lewis's best moments were when he embraced the fact that he was not a very pleasant person, like in The Nutty Professor. But most of the time, his desperation to please backfired.

I liked him when he was teamed with Dean Martin and some of his work shortly after that, but I sort of outgrew him when I got older.

I found these movies entertaining when I was a child, but I thought he was over-the-top silly even then. But he was entertaining enough with Dean Martin as his foil.

I agree. He was not a pleasant person, in fact down right nasty.
My family worked with him for many years and the stories are bad.
During telethons, he was seen pushing the children off stage.

I recall that VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET or whatever, where he's an alien, wasn't too bad. I skipped the rest. I'm not French. The crosseyed shitfaced look never appealed to me.
