Did Anyone Hear About This Horrible Thing In Chicago?

Seems there's a night club on the south side that has an upstairs; the upstairs has several code violations and was told NEVER to operate up there, as it is too dangerous.

Last night, hundreds of people were there when two women began arguing on the dance floor. The details aren't totally clear, but someone (allegedly security) began spraying mace.

One of the code violations (a huge one for Chicago) is that there was only ONE exit. Hundreds of people ran for that exit and in the process, 21 people died.

Twenty-one people.

Sickening.

Very, very sad.

Indeed, and evidently the actions of the club's own security staff in response to a pair of women fighting precipitated the tragedy.

I read about that this morning.

21 people dead because 2 women couldn't get along.
Because security couldn't contain them and sprayed mace into the crowd.
Because the night club didn't ensure that they were up to code.

I'm still waiting to see the names of the deceased. Although most of my friends don't frequent those types of clubs there's still the off chance I'll know one of them.

I saw the story on it on MSNBC. The owner's apparently claiming that he reached an agreement with the city to only close a portion of the upstairs.

I hope he never, ever has a restful night's sleep again, but i'm mean that way.

I sincerely hope you don't know any of the deceased.

One still has yet to be identified.

I'm just so perplexed about the whole scene, y'know? I can't really picture it happening...imaging (awfully) how so many people died.

It's really chilling.

There was a guy on the news this morning calling from the hospital. He was knocked unconscious in the stampede. He says he woke up some time later zipped up in a bodybag!

Guess no one bothered to check his vitals.

Apparently the city is going to be filing criminal charges against the owners. Good deal.

Of course I heard about it, I live in the Chicagoland area, many of the people from the burgs like me drive down to Chi-town to go clubbing every weekend. It could have easily have been me, well I don't go clubbing but many of my acquaintances do and many time they will try and drag me along with them and I’m trying new things now days. I'll have to see the obits tomorrow to check if anyone died that I might know, its unlikely but still possible.

Holycrap that's sickening.

Sounds like an urban legend.

I heard two different stories:

1. Allah struck down 21 alcohol drinking infidels in Chicago with a panic weapon as well as taking out 21 capitalist puppets of Satan on the east coast with a snow bomb. Allah Akhbar! The Great Satan is punished again!;

OR

2. 42 American heroes went home , though they didn't return to their houses today. In Chicago, 21 true american Patriots were observing President's Day when they were fatally overcome with their love for America...meanwhile on the eastern seaboard, another 21 true American Heros were going about their lives in spite of the terror attacks when an act of God took them home to Jesus.

CNN was unable to cover either emerging crisis due to a lack of graphics.

Flags will remain at full mast across the country.

We have a club kind of like that in Cincinnati. I decided tonight not to ever go there again. Ours is five stories high, and has a different themed room on each level. The only two ways out are the elevator, which is slower than my grandma, and the five levels of stairs. Even on a calm night, getting out is HORRIBLE!! I don't know what it would be like in a panic. I wonder how they're allowed to operate?

I bet you won't hear any more mention of it. It was around 8 this morning when the news was still breaking and they were taking calls from survivors in the ER. He said it and at first the newscasters didn't believe they'd heard him correctly. But he confirmed that, yes indeed, he'd been stuffed and zipped into a bodybag while he was knocked out.

I hope no one happened to die because of some lazy EMT.

FUCK YOU'RE STORIES.
It was just a bunch of kids trying to have fun on an extended weekend (Monday was President's Day). Some of them panicked after some security guards sprayed pepper spray to break-up a chick fight and the gas got into the ventilation system. They panicked; no doubt the fear was spurred on by all the terror alerts fro the terrorist reports and threats of poison gas attacks by Bin Laden. In the stampeded a lot of everyday teenagers, boys and girls, regular casual people, the boy/girl next door were stampeded and trampled to death.

I did just hear on the (local) news that a lot of people were yelling that it was Anthrax, which heightened the chaos.

So....you're going with the "Fear of Allah's Sword" version?

Group mentality panic aggravated by fears of chemical weapons attack, yes. Fights are common in hip, crowded, rowdy clubs, not just in Chicago but any big city. If it were just from the pepper spray itself then we would get this every weekend because pepper-spray is a common way to break-up scuffles.

Someone yelled "poison gas" before the stampede, so obviously fear of terrorist attack had something to do with it.

That's probably wise, since your fine Pinoy ass could singularly precipitate a riot.

This is the most ridiculous bullshit that I've read today. If you've ever been in a gas chamber full of CS gas (as anyone who's been to Army basic training has) you know that very few people can keep their shit wound tight when they have to breath it (or similar pepper spray) in an enclosed area. Half the guys in my Platoon went nuts when we had to take off the head gear of our mop suits and rushed the door, knocking the drill sergeant who was leaning against it over a railing and onto his ass. A couple of guys even fell on the ground screaming (one of whom, embarrassingly, was the son of a command sergeant major) and had to be carried out. The important point in this is that they all knew that they were in a room full of CS gas. They all knew that if wouldn't kill them. They all knew that every recruit has to go through that. And still they went nuts when they were ordered to stop holding their breath and breathe.

Being maced is no fun. A similar thing happened to me years ago except we were outside the club when it started. Even in the open air the effects were immediate and lasted over an hour. I don't want to imagine what it must have been like in an enclosed place.

I can imagine it! I've been in the Army CS shack at Fort Leonard Wood.
