I took pain pills for about four days straight, doctor's orders, and since I stopped I have really felt like crap. Dizzy, headaches, nausea, trouble sleeping, etc. Took about two days to get through that....finally starting to feel better this afternoon.

Is that normal? Does one develop a physical dependency on them so quickly, or do they just fuck up your system?

Was I this close to a stay at The Betty?

I never really liked those pills much... The next day I always feel like crap... You should really call you doctor and find out if it could be addiction or normal... Not sure how large a dose you are taking or what medication you are on...

Trouble was you took them four days straight.

They work much cleaner with vodka.

Dr. Lance "Coma!" Castor

It all depends

How many you took. Were you relying on them around the clock? I mean if they were in your system for 4 days you will withdraw from them. I doubt you were close to Betty. Even though I am a RN, I do not take meds. Especially pain meds. Only meds if I am really really sick.

what were the pills ruby?

some medications stay in the system longer than others. depending on the medication, that's not too surprising of a reaction. it's unlikely that is was a physiological withdrawl (again, depending on what you were taking), but rather the unpleasant side effects of heavy drugs. also, some of that could have been a more psychosomatic effect, caused by a sort of psychological withdrawl.

i think you'll be able to stay clear of detox for a while still :)

They fuck up your system and can cause (depending on the prescription) certain problems with waste elimination.
I find scotch or tequila to be a much cheaper option...

A prolonged heavy dose, like 2 weeks or more could cause you more problems...but I don't think you are ready for rehab just yet.

Lexie, I was being facetious about the alcohol. Since you don't really know me at all, you are not particularly qualified to judge my level of responsibility. But, I do appreciate the thought, however misinformed you may be.

*spoken in my best Scarlett O'Hara voice* If only Doctor Castor was at my side during my time of need. Goodness knows the amount of pain and suffering he could have saved me from. *lays down on fainting couch, hand draped loosely over my forehead as I glance under my eye lashes for his reaction*

OMG, did I just write that?

Quick, I need an intervention!

Intervention

Bend over and let me tongue you til you see stars

Ruby, you likely became dependent on narcotics but that's not a big deal. Many people become dependent, especially those who are in hospitals and end up on IV morphine or demerol and the like. For the most part, withdrawal is exactly like you described. Most people who withdraw describe it like a mild case of the flu. Most don't even know they're going through withdrawal.

The thing to remember is that dependence is not the same as addiction. Dependence is a physical phenomenon, a chemical change that your body goes through when you use certain substances for various periods of time. When you take away that substance, your body demands more by making you feel like shit. That's likely what happened to you.

Addiction, on the other hand, is a social phenomenon that may or may not involve dependence. Addiction is when you'll give up everything, and do just about anything, to get whatever it is you're addicted to, whether it's narcotics, gambling, tobacco, sex or inhaling butane with your buddies down at the gas station.

Addicts go visit Betty (if they're rich enough). Those like you who become temporarily dependent just feel crappy for a while, then get over it and move on.

No worries hon. Go get laid. You'll feel much better.

You're my favorite pharmacist in the world! :) Thank you. I feel much better now. I just wish that the doctors would explain what we should expect when coming off of them. I notice that most try to avoid prescribing narcotic pain meds, but they never say why. Why is that?

Rhys, Lex, you're to report to my room for time out immediately.
;-)

Oh well...thanks to Lexie then...

I get to report for a time out I get to report for a time out!!!

I wanna be spanked by Ruby...how bad do I have to be before you do that huh?

:D

everytime i feel like that and need to detox i just drink lots and lots of water, cranberry juice, or maybe even a few cups of fresh goldenseal tea a day if you have it. it may just be a placebo effect but it makes me feel better
p.s.
pain pills are the devil :D

What were the pills? How many did you take? What exactly was wrong that you needed them? How were you eating for those 4 days?

Sigh's explanation seems very accurate here.

But PM me if you want details. Or if you just need to get laid.

chances are that if you were taking them on a regular basis, the effects just need time to metabloize out of your system. feeling groggy and tired for a day or two is quite normal.

also if you have taken any other meds that would potentiate the effects of narcotics then it is possible for the effects to linger a bit longer.

as a rule most people dont get addicted in a four day time span...so give it a little time ruby....i am sure you will be feeling better soon!

;)

Bingo.

Drink copious amounts of pure water. Drink and pee...drink and pee. If nothing else, it'll occupy the time.
