Designer Babies

I started a thread on the subject some 10 years ago when it was more of a 'what if' situation. Now reality is just around the corner.

What are your thoughts on the subject? The ethics associated with the reality? What laws, if any, should be in place?

Designer babies don't go to special education, do they?

And just how long do you think that would last?

Ishmael

I think that with the power of white privilege,

;) ;)

... it would last an eternity.

Oh hell to the no, I want my baby to be white, blue-eyed, blonde and gay! That's where the money is! SHOW ME DA MONEY!!!

The first cut is going to be the financial cut. Those parents that can afford to have the procedure done will do so. And I'm betting the choices are going to be health and intelligence. And that is what's going to spark the outrage.

I think you'll find the majority of people accessing this will be parents looking to guarantee gender.

Like my old neighbour who has 4 girls and thought she'd try again for a boy. She fell pregnant last year..... and her twin girls are due in May.

That is available today via two different technologies that do not involve any sort of genetic manipulation.

I know at least one family that would activate genes for sugar metabolisation - they already have 2 kids wih Pompe.
Honestly, used responsibly, I don't see a problem with designer babies.
Most people would do just about anything to guarantee the health and success of their children.

And there won't be that many doing this anyway... the cost would mean that only a tiny percentage could.

And that is exactly what's going to fire up the outrage.

It's about time we start artificially improving the genetic quality of human beings.

This should be done en masse, but only made affordable to the very wealthy.

Would you have a baby with a "darkie" if you could remove the "darkie" gene from him/her?

Just imagine a world without retards, and what a great world that would be!

Still don't see an issue.
The very wealthy own mansions and private planes, but you don't see the masses clamouring for the same.

Height, especially for boys. Studies show that tall men get the job.

Yes you do along with the politicians that pander to their unrealistic dreams.

We're 18 Trillion in debt and our President is going to make a big grand speech tonight demanding we give him more tax money to spend, not on the poor anymore, on the middle-class.

I can imagine that a designer tax-break will become right popular.

;) ;)

Yall really endorsing this bullshit? Who the fuck want a perfect baby? That takes all the fun out of parenting. People need to starting being grateful for what they are giving. We are made to sin, some are made to be dumb. You got to have the poor to appreciate being rich. And you got to have the rich so the poor could chase their dreams. Motherfuckers always trying to fuck up the program.

Ahh, but the rich man gets whatever he wants. ;)

The kernel of wisdom here. But man has shown himself to be far from wise in so many cases. If it can be done, it will be done is the rule. The reasons for doing so are outlined in the article, the prevention of congenital disease. Although we can surmise from past experience that that will be the smallest application of the technology.

Some nation states will embrace the technology as a policy and apply it for their own purposes. N. Korea is a state that jumps immediately to mind, although I doubt that they will be the only one.

This is a BIG societal game changer.

Cmon Ish, this is some bullshit. Humans just need to accept the fact that you are imperfect. The Designer baby being immune from diseases doesn't do shit for you and me. A game changer is finding a actually cure for the shit.

Your aberrant 'i' nucleobase must be the reason why you're so fascinated with gays and their lifestyle.

For everyone else, it's "GATTACA'.

I didn't bother to look it up.

;)

What fascination? I've had gay friends and roommates in the past. I wonder what they would choose for their children...
