I present an interesting question. Is a hysterectomy for the woman, the same as desexing an animal. We all know that if a man is castrated he quickly loses sexual interest. So do all women lose that interst as well. Or do they just tolerate sex?

I believe that after a hysterectomy, doctors prescribe hormone supplements to make up for the hormone production of the lost ovaries. How effective this supplementation is re: retaining the sex drive is something a woman who has undergone a hysterectomy would know.

A hysterectomy is the removal of the ovaries and the uterus and usually doesn't have any affect on the sexual drive of a women..

Although i have seen women who have had no desire after a hysterectomy, i've also seen alot with no desire without one..

There is all kinds of medical treatments if the woman loses the desire..

It's usually an emotional thing.. and not a physical thing.. that cause women to lose the desire..

Yes, hormones are prescribed..

hysterectomy, doesn't nessacerily mean the ovaries are gone....some women who have undergone this procedure, have higher sex drives......no more fear of getting pregnant, no more monthly cycles, they feel a new freedom....i work in a hospital, this is what some women have told me......:)

April-wine is right...

Hysterectomy alone simply means removal of the uterus, which plays little to no role in female sex drive. Often though, hysterectomy is done with bilateral oophorectomy (just a fancy medical term for the surgical removal of both ovaries). Still, even if both ovaries are removed, sex drive usually isn't affected much because sex drive in both men and women is largely mediated by androgens which are continue to be made to some degree by the adrenals.

Doctors often do prescribe hormones following removal of the ovaries, but the hormones replaced are estrogen +/- progesterone which have beneficial effects in preventing arterial disease and osteoporosis. Topical estrogens are often also used to prevent female genital atrophy and allow for more comfortable sex.

April-wine maybe right. But it doesn't end up that way for all women. I have 3 sisters all of whom are and have been sexually dead after hysterectomies. I am married to a woman who had her hysterectomy at the age of 38. Every thing was okay until she turned 50 now she has no interest at all. HRT made her ill so that ended that and the doctor says there is no known cure, so it doesn't always work out. Does it?

My mother had one when she was 35 and now at 52, she's about ready to kill my father with her demands. God, I wish I could get that image out of my head!

*shudders*

My paretns do NOT have sex!
My parents do NOT have sex!

Ya know, there's times when a vivid imagination is a bad thing. :p

hysterectomy is not sesexing a women, many of the procedures are medically necessary. if the ovaries are removed then hormone replacement is also needed. sometimes this can alter sex drive but many women can lead a normal sex life without all the worries. animals reproduce out of instinct. but humans have the luxury of bieng abel to have sex for love, enjoyment and to have children. so my answer is a resounding no! it does not "desex" a lady who has to have one!:)

Being that I had one when I was 25...

I can tell ya that no,I am not desexed,in fact now that there aren't anymore "times of the month", things got lot better in my house. To be totally honest, when pregnancy wasn't a worry, things got alot wilder and more often. Now I still have my ovaries,so maybe that makes a difference. In my humble opinion, many woman use the surgery as an excuse to get out of sex, especially if it wasnt good to begin with.
