We should not let a poorly informed mixed martial arts athlete with some bizarre opinions discredit an exciting new sport. Mixed martial arts is as close as one can get to a real fight and still have an athletic contest.

When I was a teenager, I took karate lessons. In retrospect I can tell that the training could have been more practical. In free sparing one pulls punches and kicks short of the target. This does not build the power one needs to make a technique effective. It builds the wrong habits. Once I read of a karate student who got into a real fight. Out of habit and nervousness he continued to pull his punches and kicks. He lost the fight.

Boxing does not train one to block a kick. It does not teach one how to respond if the fight goes to the ground.

If you want to learn how to fight, or you have a son or grandson who wants to learn, look for a mixed martial arts studio that uses protective equipment to avoid injuries. Mixed martial arts training will also teach a teenage girl or a women to defend herself against a rapist.

100%. Hapkido is pretty good to, but a lot harder to find anyone who teaches well. My Taekwondo / Hapkido teacher is an old South Korean guy whose used to compete in MMA and was in the top 100 MMA fighters worldwide a good few years ago. If you can find someone who teaches Tkd/Hapkido/MMA, drop everything and sign your kids up. I do Tiny Tigers instructing at his school and the little kids love it LOL and they're all so cute in their pads and helmets dancing around and kicking the shit out of each other - and then you get the ones that a kitten could beat up LOL
