I have an irrational fear of going to the dentist, it doesn't help me any knowing that my fear is irrational. I have an appointment today, only a few hours from now. I know that there is nothing to be afraid of but I get physically ill just thinking about going. Once I walk in the door I'm reduced to the equivilant of a 4 year old without the kicking and screaming, on the outside anyway.

Added to my already unfounded fear is the fact that I can't stand to have someone putting their fingers in my mouth. Ewwww.

Ohh, I wish I had never made the appointment now, wish I'd just pulled the damn tooth myself.:(

Do you fear going to the dentist? Is there any profession that scares the hell out of you, aside from politicians and lawyers?

Maybe this will help? :p

You're not alone, WE. I loathe going to the dentist and just the thought of it turns my stomach. :( :rose:

Damn Min... you beat me to it! I was gonna post that link. :p

I lost a fucking tooth recently and I won't go even if I have that white trash Jack o Lantern look....plus I don't have insurance yet and I left a kidney at the Rheumatologist's office to pay her, I donated a cornea at the Eye doctor's and You don't wanna know what I left at the Gynocologist's office.

Thanks Min for the link. I'll be sure to read that later, after the appoinment. Right now I'm too busy obsessing. I read the first few paragraphs, one sentence was why she chose the dentist and the slogan, "guarenteed pain free".

I chose my dentist because of their slogan as well, "We cater to cowards" I loved that, it fits me.

The only positive thing about going is that my dentist is a good looking man.

Abs, you kill me.:p Thanks for the laugh.

Definitely not alone.
Took me 20 years to pluck up the courage to go for a visit, and only because I was in so much pain from an abcessed tooth.

I explained my problem, it was a woman dentist, Chinese, and she was wonderful.

Still hate and detest it though.
And like you, am usually physically sick before an appointment.

:(

Well, I'm off to my own personal Hell for the day. It's an hours drive to get there and I have a couple of stops to make. Thanks for the support. I'll check back in when I'm finished crying like a baby:(

The best advice I can offer is: relax. Seriously.

As soon as you sit in the chair, relax every muscle you can find, if you find yourself tensing, relax everything again.

Some people start at their toes and work up, thinking of each and every muscle that they can and relaxing it/them.

Just go limp, completely. It works and has the fortunate effect of calming you down too.

You have touched a nerve.

I had a tooth pulled when I was 11 some 40 something years ago. I can still taste the rubber wedge that was placed between my teeth to keep my jaw open!

I've resisted the 'dentist visit' ever since. My last visit was many many years ago to a practice in Carnaby Street. A really great Aussie dentist my wife found. The first visit we just talked and he took a quick look around. By the time of the next visit, a week later, he'd skipped the country with the receptionist!

I took this as a warning, and decided to skip the dentist. Now a tooth has cracked and I know I'm going to have to summon the courage to go soon.

My thoughts are with you.

Aw, Wicked, I really feel for you. I had terrible experiences with dentists in my youth but am now quite satisfied with my current doctor. Still, I avoid it and never go on time, i.e., it's only pain that brings me to make an appointment.

One suggestion. Use a Walkman (or ipod). Choose music that really makes you listen. Even then you may need to work on listening, but it can help get you through it.

Take care, sweets. Perdita :rose:

I'm back....and as always I was worked up over nothing...No pain, for now while I'm numb anyway.

I was informed, however, that because I brush too hard I have ruined the enamel on my teeth:( . I had 2 teeth fixed today but I have to go back several more times to get all the work done.

Brush too hard? You have to really scrub something to get it clean, right? Evidently not the case with teeth, who'd have thunk it.

At least I still have all the ones I went in with:D

Neon, I'm sorry to hear that you will have to be making the dreaded visit sson. I wish you luck.

Perdita, thanks for the suggestion and your well wishes.

The only part of going to the dentist that I really, really hate is the money, and the hassle of arranging an appointment. I'm convinced that there's really no need to go to a dentist on a regular basis if you floss and brush--it's all a myth that dentists perpetuate to keep themselves and their legions of dental hygenists employed. Every other area of health-care has made major, major innovations to make life easier for us. What has the dental-industry given us? Whirling brushes. Great. Thanks.

Next time you go, ask for nitrous oxide. It's fucking GREAT. You'll be so high you won't care what they're doing. I LOVE that stuff.
